30th birthdays

What did you do / do you plan to do for your 30th birthday?  Your H's?  What have your friends and family done?

Most of my friends are turning 30 this year (as am I) and my H asked me the other day what I want to do for my bday.  I kind of don't feel like doing any party type thing, esp since all of my friends are doing big stuff that I attended/am attending so I am seeing them a lot this year already (we all live in different states).  Plus my H gets stressed out when trying to plan parties and I end up doing most of the work anyway, and I just don't feel like it.  I think I'd rather just not make a big deal of it and go out for a nice dinner with just my H or something easy like that.  Am I being super lame?

Re: 30th birthdays

  • Everyone is different. If you want a quiet night out, then that is what you should do!

I had a party at Gaslight. It did not take much effort, we just had half the bar area (no cost), I sent an evite, DH worked out the price per bottle of wine and apps that we provided. He had a couple of bottles of champagne that he was allowed to bring (it was cheaper that way) for a corking fee. It was fun.

I also don't have a TON of friends like some people do, so there were maybe 20 people there total, which is why we were able to just go to the bar area.

  • I wanted to go out to dinner with people but none of my friends could make it and my family made it too difficult to plan. I canceled that idea and DH took me to Providence for the night.

For his 30th, we had a party at his parents house.

  • H's 30th is coming up in a couple of months. I'm planning on having a surprise party for him at home just with our close family and friends. I'm having it catered by one of his favorite restaurants. I think he's going to love it.

  • I'm not big on birthdays in general, plus my birthday is July 3, so no one is ever around.  Usually DH and I just go out for a nice dinner and call it a night. Im sure it will be the same for my 30th when I get there.

    ...hello out there!

  • I'm so lame, I can't remember what we did for DH's 30th.

For mine, we were living in the San Francisco Bay Area and have a lot of friends there.  Four of us have birthdays in October and we'd gotten into the habit of celebrating together, usually around Halloween.  Three out of the four of us turned 30 the same year.

Our group was the partying type and we regularly went out clubbing and knew a couple of the big promoters in the city.  We reserved a large area of the club the night of our birthday party, had a ton of food brought in before clubbing hours started, and after eating danced and drank like we were 29 Smile.  It was an epic event and we loved every minute of it.  Oh, and everyone was in costume, since it was Halloween weekend.

But that's not at all what you want, haha.  I think a nice dinner out with DH sounds lovely--make sure it's something really special though and splurge for a tasting menu or something!

Or, if you think you might want to celebrate with friends but still want to keep it easy, just pick a restaurant, keep the group relatively small, and just have dinner and drinks.  That shouldn't be any more work than an Evite and making a reservation.

I'd rather be rock climbing or playing volleyball

  • For my 30th, one of my good friends from home came to Boston, and we got a hotel room downtown for the night.  A few of my friends joined us for dinner at Whiskey's (yes, all class, heh), and then we met up with some other friends for drinks at the Black Rose. I don't remember much of the night, (other than pouring myself into the hotel bed at the end of it),  but I do remember yelling about the hot bartender's butt across the room right as the band stopped playing, heh. I was single then; it was totally allowed.

For my husband's, we had only just started dating, and he is not a big birthday person. I bought him tickets to a comedy show and a nice dinner. His friend met up with us for the show, and then we all went out for drinks later.

I say get dressed up and splurge on a really delightful dinner if you don't want to bother with the whole party thing.

This is my biggest worry with doing something big.  I hate coordinating people and I also hate when I try to plan something on a larger scale then half the people can't make it for the date I picked.

I always thought I'd want a big party but now that it's approaching I am so meh on it.  I guess I'm getting a bit quieter in my "old age" !

I totally wanted something and was really kind of upset-- DH tried his best but isn't a planner. I was completely happy with the end result though.  Birthdays are like New Years Eve... you feel like you have to do something but really, you just have to do what makes you happy.

  • Do what makes you happy, not what someone else wants you to do.

My 30th was SO long ago. I had a small party at the local bar I lived at ;)

For my 40th I wanted a trip. We went to Savannah.

I'm all about experiences over gifts these days

  • You should do what you want!

We had a big party for DH.  He loved it.

DH and I just went to dinner to celebrate mine.

I love this, it's so true.
  • And I don't think you're being lame. I prefer to let my birthdays slip by with relatively like fanfare.

For DHs, I'll probably plan a party at home, which I'll keep small because it's a month before my father's 50th birthday and we're planning a huge surprise party (he was a teen parent haha).

Yes, this is a great way to look at it!  Thanks everyone for your input.  I'm thinking I will just have to make it clear that I don't want anything big.  For my mom's 50th birthday, she thought we were all planning her a big surprise party, and when we just went out for dinner with our immediate family and no one else was there, she was super upset.  I think my H is worried that I am going to react similarly, since my mom was like "Oh don't make a big deal..." but really wanted a big deal.

  • For my 30th we had drinks at Union Bar and Grill and dinner at Via Matta, I had a lot of champagne and vodka... at times, in the same drink...

My 35th was very nice. My fabulous sister flew up and we had dinner at L'Espalier.

  • I went to Amsterdam and London for my 30th in August.  We have friends in Holland and one of my bffs flew in from Saudi Arabia to meet up with us - it was amazing :)

    For DH's 30th I threw a party.

  • For H's I rented a cheap hall, got some trays of food from a local place and invited pretty much everyone, friends and family.  It was a fun time, we got to go out without really "going out".  Friends have reserved rooms at restaurants, got a bunch of people to go bar hopping and one friend reserved the upstairs room at Lir.  Mine is coming up next January and I don't know what I want to do.  We have 3 weddings this year, I'm in one and H is in 2--plus within a month of my birthday is 2 close friend's 30th birthday too.  I may be partied out, so no I don't think you're being lame as I will probably do the same thing!
