This is a good read, if you're bored.

I died at mofongo's post. You'll see.

ETA: wait. Maybe it was MKEsweetie, not mofongo. I'm too lazy to go back and check.

  • I don't think I would ever prepay college. What if, for some reason, the state school options you paid into are not the right fit for your kid? Would you get that money back or are you SOL?

Yeah, that's what I was confused about. But did you get to the crazy yet?

  • Are you talking about that K chickk who's all, "don't go to community college, there will be a stigma, even if you go on to a 4 yr school" bs? Girl is nuts.

Yes! And all "universities" are superior to all state schools. Moron.

We have something similar here in WA.  How it works is you pay for units.  100 units = 1 yr of school.  So you pay the current rate for a unit, then when your kid is of college age it gets paid out to you at the going rate of the most expensive public state school.  So they take tuition at that school / 100 and that's what you get for ea unit.

If you go out of state, you still get the same value but will have to pay any difference out of pocket.  It is also transferable between family members and can be applied towards room and board, books, etc in the case of scholarships or what have you.  You can also request a refund, but obviously that's only going to be for the amount you put in and could've used/invested in other things over the years.

  • Yeah. She makes no sense because a) Universities can be state schools, which she should know because b) she went to one of them and c) even if she started out at a cc, there's no way anyone in the working world would know about it unless she wanted them to. Total idiot. Education costs in general make me crazy and I think that the issue will come to a head at some point in the near future when even the 1% can't afford to send their kids to a private liberal arts school. As an aside, my coworker who lives in manhattan spends $35k a year per kid to send her two kids to daycare. DAYCARE.

  • Are state schools really $46K now?  That seems crazy.

Tuition for OOS students at UVA is $37K. W/ room & board and other incidentals, it's $48K. WTF.

Just a little more than SBP claims to pay for daycare!

In-state is about $25K which still seems nuts.

This is how it works in TN, too.  My grandparents paid for 4 years for me, but I didn't use it (went to a cheapo school--but still a University, because I'm fancy--so scholarships covered it).  One of my 2nd cousins is using part of it now, and any units she doesn't use will go to her sister.

Mine was about $5K a year too, now it's about $7500 a year. Not terrible. I'm surprised, NYS is broke.

So, my spouse and dependents get free tuition at any MA school. TUITION. Not fees. Which are about 3X as much as tuition. Useful.

  • I honestly don't know how anyone can afford to get a degree anymore.  People shouldn't be paying off their school loans for their entire lives.

  • Wow. Tuition at Rutgers is $10k for in state. Not too bad. By comparison, tuition at my alma mater is $40k. Yikes.

  • My private college in NYC was around $24 K a year. (half the time I think it was a mistake to go there because it was so much money that I'm still paying back).

I cannot BELIEVE that any state schools are in the $30-$40K range! That's outrageous! This just made my prospects of having children a bit less likely. Unless they are geniuses or athletically inclined and get a scholarship. :(

  • My alma mater is rated one of the "best buys" for colleges by Forbes.  Tuition is still under $6k a year.

    BUT IT'S A STATE SCHOOL!

Lord knows it's a miracle I ever got a job.
