in the market for a new couch and dining table....

and not sure where to look.

Our couch was a wedding present. Are they suppose to only last (less than) 7 years?!?

and we had a family dining room table when we moved in but then my aunt came and took it from us when DS was like 3 days old (literally), and so DH and SIL went to IKEA and bought this table with wicker chairs. the chairs suck and I don't want a glass top table.

Where did you get your table and/or couch from?

Also, we have a chair and loveseat that match the couch - the love seat isn't used as much as the couch so it's not as worn out and the chair is still perfectly fine. Would you sell/get rid of those and buy a whole new set or would you just go for a new couch that is the same color or as close as you can get it. It's just brown leather. DH thinks we should just go buy a couch and 2 chairs. get rid of the love seat.

Re: in the market for a new couch and dining table....

  • I don't like matchy matchy upholstered pieces so I'd just get a new couch that goes w/ brown leather and keep the chair and loveseat.  Maybe a pattern, like herringbone or something.  Or replace both the sofa and loveseat with a sectional that would go with the brown leather chair, if the room layout allows for it.

My couch is from Ethan Allen and is over 4yrs old, but still looks brand new.  I expect to get at least 10yrs out of it and then just reupholster.  Our dining room table is from World Market.

  • The set we use daily is Italian leather and we got it from Star furniture.  It has held up very well - about 6 years old.  Easy to wipe down, and only has a few cat scratches. :-/

The set in our gameroom is from Gallery furniture and we have had it about 5 years.  It's a chenille fabric, I think, and it still looks great - but it is also rarely used.  We got it more for a lot of seating than we did style, since we entertain a lot (or used to!).  We had it scotch guarded before it was delivered b/c it was fabric and we knew kids (and drunk guests!) could wreck havoc on it.

I would say a couch should last more than 7 years - what is wrong with it? Sagging cushions? Stained fabric?  I would go with a patterned or textured fabric if stains are your problem.  I find that solid colors and smooth surfaces show stains much worse, or they show the cleaning ring if you try to clean the spot.

We looked for a dining set forever, and we didnt' find one we liked.  Our breakfast table set was the one DH had growing up (the honey oak circle with the scrolly chairs - the one everyone had in the 80s-90s!  lol.)  The one in our dining room is kind of being borrowed from DH's aunt until (or if) her college daughter wants it later.  I doubt she will want it - but we really like it, so we wouldn't mind keeping it. :-)

ETA: just realized you said it was leather.  I find leather holds up well, so not sure what the issue w/ your couch is.  Depending on your budget, you might just get a new couch that "goes" with it - even a pop of color, if you want.  Luckily the brown is a good neutral that should match most things. If money is no object - you can check out new sets.

  • we apparently sit a lot? and so the arms are worn out, the seats are worn out. i don't really get the problem, either. but now when you sit, you can feel the wooden board that is behind it on your bum. HATE IT.

not that we abuse it, but i'm guessing it just wasn't all that great. we even switched the loveseat and couch's position so that we would use them equally. the love seat isn't even as worn as the couch.

  • ours is from La-Z-Boy.  It's held up exceptionally well!  We got it about 8 years ago, and it still looks great.  It's weathered the storm of two small children, 3 cats and a dog.  And we let the animals pretty much go wherever they want in terms of furniture.  the kids have taken it apart countless times to make cushion-buildings on the floor and jump on the "inside".

it's a greenish/sage/brownish color that kind of goes with everything.  i guess it isn't really green unless you put something brown next to it.  the fabric is chenille, i guess, but it's been tough.  they have a stain-free guarantee when you have it treated, and we've even gotten pen and blood out of the cushions.

i would absolutely buy from there again.  it's still SO comfortable.  i sleep better on the couch tnan i do on our bed.

one of the kids broke part of the wooden infrastructure of the couch a while back (running and jumping/plowing in to the couch as an 11 year old is not the best idea), but you can't really tell.

I believe the model name is Daphne.  We got the one with the chaise at the end (would not do that again, don't love it).  You can order it in any number of configurations/upholstery.

i think you can get the cushions re-stuffed.  if the couch is otherwise in good shape (and you still like it), you might want to look into that.

we bought our bedroom set from American Furniture - not an impressive store by any means, but they gave us a great deal, free delivery and very good service.  they don't have a lot of products in the store, but can order a lot of different stuff.  our bedroom set is the brand Coaster, and I'm very happy with the quality (especially for the price).
