*surfbride* or anyone who's h has been snipped

Can you give me a little insight about the aftermath of the procedure? How much time did your h take off of work? How long did it take for you h to get to 0 swimmers?

This is gettiing to be one of our only options and I'd really appreciate any insight or good reading materials.

 Thanks!

Re: *surfbride* or anyone who's h has been snipped

  • i know some one who did and he needed to take over a week off work. they tell you to wear tight underwear and they mean it. i heard it hurts super bad, way worse then they tell you. also, he isn't really able to get up quickly or do anything because of swelling and such..

but this is just what i heard from a close friend or family member.

  • Is it covered by insurance or is it considered voluntary?

im 99% sure his will be covered, but 100% sure that my procedure is not.

I don't get why his is ok,  but mine isn't.

That is so stupid! My IUD was costly as well. Don't insurance companies know it is cheaper to pay for BC now than babies/kids later?!?

This is what I keep saying, but apparently not having kids is looked as lost revenue by insurance companies or something dumb like that.

And it's completely unfair (tim alert) to those of us with abnormally small uteruses who can't get an iud. I wish the FDA would move their arses and approve the smaller one.

  • that is so weird.. is this why you wanted to go overseas for a different one? did we all have that discussion once upon a time?

Yep, but long story short I can't get one there either.

  • It was amazing how quick and simple it was. He had swelling and discoloration (blue!), but not much pain. He said it was uncomfortable, but not painful. He took Advil and put a cold pack on the area for the first 2-3 days. He did not take any time off of work. He could do nearly everything right away. I say nearly, because sex was out for a week or two.

Re: swimmers. I forget how long after he brought in a sample. In my mind, it seems like 2 weeks. He's at work, so I can't ask. I do remember that he brought in the second sample the next day.

Everything has been great after the procedure.

No,but yours seems more like an anomolie. Surf's review seems to be more consistent with what I've been reading. I'm, also, not telling h what you said.

  • I know a few men who have had a vasectomy. It was the permanent birth control method of the couples that lived on the street I grew up on. Anyway, most of them usually took Friday off from work and went back to work on Monday. Some of them were even outside playing with their kids a few hours after the procedure.

lol. yea, all the reviews i read/heard before were exactly like surfs.. but this happened recently. i'm glad you're not telling your h.. but he should know.

are you sure there is no place in his heart for children??

Yep, my mom had another break down last week and we had another conversation about it last week. We're both 1000% sure now.

Update: H is home from work. I just asked him ALL about it.

We were in the building less than 30 minutes. It was the no scalpel vasectomy. They did some kind of numbing swab (sounds like the dentist, right?) The actual procedure was quick... some pulling and pressure... a click on each side... um, and some smoke. 1-2 minutes total for the procedure. Then, they dressed it with gauze and gave him some ice.

I went with him, but he insisted that he drive home. Shrug. So manly.

Correction to earlier note about the swimmers. H said it was 6 weeks after the procedure to bring in the sample.

Wow, this sounds even less invasive than what I've been reading.

Thank you for that FAQ!  This is really helpful, thanks again!

  • this made me wonder on H should get the snip...

ETA: After my IUD has to come out. Correct me if I am wrong but I can't get another right after right?

  • I don't normally post here, but it was linked on thebump, so thought I would comment.  My H got his done almost a month ago, at Dr. Snip. No swelling, no discolor, 10 minute procedure. They do the cosult and procedure at the same appt, figure an hour total.  He took aleve later that evening, and the next afternoon. No issues, and we have 2 small kids at home he was helping with.

Ours was covered by insurance, only had to pay $10 office visit, they will check your benefits prior to making the appt, so you know the cost/coverage.
