NSOR: Preventing yourself from crying?

Ok ladies, when I get stressed at work and/or angry with employees I get an incrediable urge to cry.  I usually try to make it to the bathroom so I can do it privately because I find it unprofessional to cry public at work.

Do you have any tips or tricks to prevent yourself from crying in situations like this?

  • This might sound out of the blue, but it really isn't, but how much exercise do you do on a daily basis?

I find myself more emotional if I am inactive.

  • I read somewhere that looking up at a bright light helps.  Maybe therapy on how to cope?

Agreed, exercise keeps my emotions in check. And it's healthy too! :)

  • Ditto RP, it sounds like you need an outlet for stress relief. Exercise, yoga, meditation are all great ways to work on stress relief.

I run and/or excerise in some form 5-6 days a week for 30-60 minutes.  I am definately active.

  • Well, in the moment of trying to stop myself from crying, I drink water. I cannot cry and drink water (or any other beverage) at the sometime. The time it takes to drink water usually gives me time to compose myself (or at least make it somewhere private). So, if you're not already, I'd recommend always keeping a water bottle with you until you get past this time.

Other than that, I agree with the all the PP. Perhaps you need another outlet for your stress? Also, have you ruled out other causes? I recently went through a period where I was crying all the time, and I finally figured out it was caused by my bc pills (even though I'd been on these pills for a while, something changed.) Once I switched to a lower dose, the crying pretty much completely stopped.

  • Look up and to the left. I know it sounds weird but it does help.
  • Exercise, sleep, Xanax....
