Non-Clicky Poll : D&R related

I am just trying to see how other people feel about the layout of a "Master Suite"

Would you think it's weird if the bathroom wasn't immediately off the bedroom but obviously still within the suite?

Our suite we're designing for our addition will have a bedroom, 3/4 bath, walk-in closet, office and laundry room so there's a lot in there.

So would you expect to go straight from the bedroom area into the bathroom without walking down any type of hallway?

  • We have to walk through our closet to our bathroom in the master suite.  I don't think it is weird or unusual.  I would think walking down an actual hallway from a bedroom to the bath would be unusual, and probably not considered an en suite.

  • Yea that's what I'm afraid it's not going to feel like.

I'll try to explain it the best I can, obviously a visual is easier but I don't have one right now.

Basically you'll walk into the "suite" and straight ahead is the laundry room. To the left of the laundry room is a large closet. To the left of that is the bedroom.

Now if you go back to the door you walk in- and you're looking at the laundry room again, to the right is the bathroom and to the right-ish of that is the office.

Does this make sense? So essentially you'd have to pass the closet and laundry ro to be in the bathroom.

  • I'm having a hard time picturing it.  Can you try to draw it out in Paint and upload?

  • If you can upload to tinypic from your phone, you can just leave the link in the post and I'll PIP for you.

Tinypic wouldn't load all the way so try that? Again i just quickly drew it out. It's not quite to scale but the idea is there.

  • My biggest concern would be having the office and as part of the suite. If I were a homebuyer with children or teens, I wouldn't want them to have to come into my bedroom to use the computer (and maybe that isn't an issue today and I'm just stuck in 98).

I think the distance between the bedroom and bathroom isn't a problem, because it's still behind closed, private doors, but people want to be able to walk around neeked without worrying about someone using the computer or washing clothes. As a teenager I wouldn't have wanted to walk through my parents' bedroom every time I wanted to do one of those things.

    This might work.

DD- those are definitely points I said to Kevin. The office is our office though, not for the kids. They'll have their own office area in our den and the basement if necessary. But the laundry thing is a good point.

  • I like the layout a lot actually (thanks for all the work to put up a visual)! I agree with DD though and would possibly reconsider the laundry room being in your master suite for the reasons she mentioned...unless you never plan on having your kids do their own laundry. I freely admit that I never did until I went to college and didn't even know how to work the washing machine until then.

I think I'd turn the laundry room space into a giant closet Smile

  • I'd switch the laundry area and the bath, then close the hallway off to create more of a true master suite (would involve minor narrowing of the office and a slightly smaller bathroom, but otherwise it seems sort of disjointed).

  • Yea I agree Mary. I think I'm gonna play around with it. A designer helped us with it so Kevin just is like whatever but I'm having second thoughts about this layout.

  • I wish we could change the shape of the addition too. It would make things easier. But it's an 800+ sq foot rectangle lol makes it difficult to arrange each piece.

  • So long as there are pass through doors from the master into the bathroom and the closet, it looks great to me!  You could even put a chute between the closet and the laundry if you wanted an easy way to keep a hamper out of your room.

  • Yes that's what I was thinking. Thanks for pip'ing. It's hard to see but there's places where I didn't draw a line which means a door. So there's a door to the bathroom. You can get to the closet from the bathroom with either a pocket door or no door (we'll decide later) or from the hallway. Then there's obviously a door to the laundry and there'll be no door to the office.

  • I like the second layout much better - it makes more sense and has a better flow in my opinion.
  • I like the 2nd layout better. The office totally makes sense, since there's room in your house for other computer areas. If it were me, though, and if I had another place to put a laundry room (I'm assuming you already have one), I'd cut the laundry room and use that extra space for a bigger closet and bathroom.
  • Kevin drew up my chicken scratch drawing in chief architect and it looks great! Thanks for all of your help!

DD- my dream is to have the laundry on the 2nd floor so I don't have to lug it to the basement etc. it's a must have for me :-). The closet is 10'x10 ish and the bathroom is like 16'x10 or something like that. So they're pretty big as it is :-)
