BFers- "ouch" question

I am BFing Miles and I have an ouchie on my left breast.  I never had any issues at all when I breastfed the first kid, so I am at a loss as to what it is and what to do.

My left nip is really tender when it is squeezed and there is a small red spot that kind of looks like a pimple.  The pain radiates from it so no matter where you squeeze it stings.  Miles has been drinking from a bottle this week since I am back to work and I am wondering if it has done something to his latch.

Any ideas on what this is and how to deal with it?

So far I am applying lansinoh and praying... any other ideas would be greatly appreciated. :)

Re: BFers- "ouch" question

  • Could it be a milk blister?  I've gotten these from time to time and they always hurt but then seem to go away almost as fast as they came on.  Occasionally, (this might be kind of gross) you can kind of "pop" them after a hot shower.  It hurts, too, but they always seem to go away almost immediately once the pressure is relieved.  Here's some of the info I found on KellyMom:

  • I haven't had one yet, but it sounds like a milk blister.

  • Sounds like a milk blister to me too. I had one the first week home with Tessa and OMG did that mother f-er hurt whenever she would latch (and for the first 30 seconds or so of eating). I considered popping it myself, but was took scared to poke hard enough with a needle LOL. It went away within a week or so. Its painful, but try to continue nursing/pumping on it--it'll help open it up.

  • I think you are all right--- I'll keep on nursing through the pain and I hope that it will open up!  It really hurts worse when it rubs in my bra :(
