I'm sure this has been asked a million times before but searching the nest is an exercise in futility!
We're planning on a babymoon to the Riviera Maya or Cozumel in mid-March, but I'm a bit overwhelmed by all the hotel options. When we've done Mexico beach vacations in the past (along the Pacific Coast), we've just done all-inclusives but we still like to make it into town for sightseeing and the occasional dinner. We've like all-inclusives b/c of the cost savings for drinking all day at the pool ![]()
But given I'm preggers and won't be drinking, we're open to non-all-inclusives, too.
But there are so many options. Any recommendations on specific hotels or areas to stay in (or avoid)? Right now, I'm thinking of something in Playa del Carmen b/c then we can walk to 5th Avenue and take the ferry to Cozumel with ease.
Oh, and what are we planning to do while there? Lay by the pool or ocean and chill. Eat some good food. Snorkel and dive (I can't dive anymore, so hubs will dive and I'll snorkel). Visit some ruins. We generally don't shop much but enjoy just walking around downtowns and people watching. We plan to stay for 4-5 nights.
Thanks in advance!

We love PDC. We stayed last time a few days in Tulum at Cabanas Tulum (their sister hotel is La Tortuga in PDC) before going to PDC for a few days- it was right on the beach and awesome. Very casual, laid back. And you are right close to the ruins. We don't like to do AIs in Mexico. Thinking about staying a few days in Akumal (between PDC and Tulum) or Isla Mujeres on our next trip along with a few nights in PDC. We did take the ferry to Cozumel and ride mopeds around the island, it was a blast, but since you are KU I might pass on that.
Some other Mexico posts, if you scroll back a few pages, there's several more.

Love loved loved Secrets Maroma Beach- great beach for snorkeling, scuba and water sports!!! Great resort. Not giant, but enough and still be managable. Very luxurious feel.
We also have been to Aventura Spa Palace. Much larger, but they have a "party" side and a "quiet" side. Not a great beach, but very nice for spa and fitness. Plus GREAT yoga classes included!
MrsD -- when you stay in non-AI, how much would you estimate food and drinks costs? We usually like to do 1-2 nicer dinners, but are fine with casual dining for lunch and the rest of the meals. And how much are drinks? Hubs will want to drink while relaxing on the beach or at the hotel pool.
Thanks!
