What is Dislocation Allowance?

We are PCSing pretty soon (first time for me) and I was reading through a bunch of pamphlets that was given to me about PCSing and there was something about dislocation allowance. What is it and how much is it? We are moving from California to Delaware if that is a factor..TIA!

  • This site explains it well: http://www.defensetravel.dod.mil/site/otherratesDLA.cfm

It's not based on distance, it's based on rank and whether or not the member has dependents.

Thank you! So do you just get the money when you arrive at your new base? Sorry, I understand how much money you get but do you have to file for it? Will it just be on his LES?

After, I think we got ours like a month or less (about) after we moved. I think its after you turn in all your paperwork, or something. It just came in the next paycheck, I believe.

ETA: It may have just popped into the account separately, I dont remember.

  • I can't speak for every branch, but I know that in the USCG we have two options: we can either get it in the form of a travel advance (a Release From Government Quarters must be issued by the Housing Officer at the new unit) or the member can wait until they submit their DD-1451 (Travel Voucher) when they report in and it will be paid to them once the pay office receives the voucher.

If they choose to get it in an advance, it gets Direct Deposited approx. 30 days prior to departure. If it's paid out on a travel voucher, it can take 4-6 weeks to be Direct Deposited to them. (when I say Direct Deposit, I mean it is an off-line payment, not a part of their paycheck, it'll just appear in their bank account randomly - that's what I've seen in the USCG).

There are other regulations regarding non-eligibility for DLA, but it would all depend on your situation and branch of service.

  • AF people actually have to file for it when they file their travel voucher.  It gets lumped in with travel pay.

  • I'm Air Force, and I always try to get it in advance.

The purpose of DLA is to help cover those little incidental costs that are associated with moving -- like fees to set up or shut off utilities, stocking your fridge/pantry with new food, buying new curtains because your old ones don't fit anymore, etc.    You will definitely find yourself spending money during your move, and especially when you move into your new home.    I would personally rather get money to pay for all of these things in advance so I don't have to worry about overdrawing my account to pay for incidentals.
