Who here has done a bathroom reno w/ contractor?
I'd like to get our bathroom redone and wanted to see if anyone could give me a ballpark figure on cost before I start presenting the idea to DH/contacting contractors. Ideally, I'd like to have it gutted and completely redone. Also, how long was your bathroom out of commission? Any recommendations would be a bonus!
Re: Who here has done a bathroom reno w/ contractor?
We have a small bathroom, I don't know, 4X7 (plus, a stand up shower). It cost $8500, about $6000 of which was labor. We used cheap material - our floor tile was $1.25/sq ft, shower tile was $.25/tile (white subway, lowes brand), $300 vanity, $200 countertop, $300 in fixtures, $100 new shower base, kept our old toilet, we did splurge $600 on a stock (i.e. not custom) frameless shower door.
We had told contractors at the time of estimate that we were not planning to go high end, and the quotes were generally 8-10,000. The contractor we went with only worked one project at a time, so he was done in 4 days. The two other contractors said 2-4 weeks, because they worked multiple projects at a time.
Unfortunately, I can't recommend our contractor. They were great to work with, and have been very responsive post-reno, but we aren't happy with their attention to detail. We've had to call them out a couple of times to fix things that we weren't happy with.
If you or your DH are slightly handy at all, doing a smaller bathroom really isn't that hard.
STBXH did his master bath himself, working really only on his 2 days off each week, and I think it turned out FABULOUSLY! Cost him maybe $1200. The only 'downside' was it did take him about 2 months to do it all but part of that was because he didn't realize how long his sink top would take to get in once he ordered it (took like 3 weeks) so if he had picked it out earlier and ordered it right away he would have been done in about a month. He'd never done anything remotely like this before, bought a book about bathroom reno's and asked lots of questions at Home Depot.
If I had an extra bathroom (I only have 1 full bath) I would seriously consider re-doing it myself after seeing how well his turned out. And I'm thinking that I might do it this summer while the kids are out of schoool anyway and knock it out in about 2 weeks (they can bathe at their fathers! LOL)

Our bathroom is narrow but long, and the quotes that we got were 10,000-15,000. I think that in the end it cost around 12-13,000. I think that's a little pricier than we could've found, but we used a general contractor to do lots of other work on our house and they use subcontractors (1 person for tile, 1 person for plumbing, 1 person for the vanity/countertop, etc), which adds to the price.
I would not recommend my contractor. Happy enough with the end product, but they were a PITA to deal with. And since we did a whole-house renovation, I'm not sure how long it would've taken if we had just done the bathroom.
Did you ever post "after" pictures of this project??

Ugh. No!! I really need to get my azz in gear. I'm still working on wall art (Brad and I are having differences of opinion) but I think I just need to put that on the backburner and get some after pics done and shared. I'm pretty darned proud of it.
Dani's seen it. She can attest to its general fabulousness. Lol
