From crib to toddler bed

The kid is 20 months.  The crib is at the lowest point and he jumped out of it today for the first time.  Is it too early to make it a toddler bed?  I really don't want to risk him jumping out again and hurting himself but the thought of him being free to move about his room all night doesn't sit well with me either.

Re: From crib to toddler bed

  • my SIL switched her girls to a floor bed at 13 months and then once they weren't rolling in or out she made put them on frames.

her girls have full size beds.

  • I have no experience with this yet, but my thought would be that if he's learned he can get out, it won't be long before he has free range of the room anyway. I'd say better to put him in a bed that he's less likely to hurt himself getting out of.
  • My cousin had the same issue around 18 months old so she invested in a crib tent  and so far so good

  • We moved B to a toddler bed at 15 months since he could and would get out and I didn't want him hurting himself.

We switched to a twin with a rail at 20 months. No issues switching. He has a step stool that he uses to get in/out of bed. We put the baby gate at the door of his bedroom because he can open the door up on his own.

  • i don't think its too early at all. we aren't there yet but i think a twin bed or toddler bed is fine at that age. when we stay at hotels, and they don't have a crib, ds gets his own queen and we just put some pillows on the sides so he doesn't roll off. the sad part is, now that he is used to it he actually sleeps better this way when we aren't at home.

  • I think it depends on the child, when he/she is ready. If LO is climbing out, then it's probably safer to get a toddler bed (or twin). When Oliver is ready, we'll probably get a platform bed from Ikea b/c they're low to the ground. We have a Malm bed in our guestroom and he does really well with climbing on/off it.

Oliver's 20 months now and not showing any signs of climbing out. He still sleeps in a sleepsak so that may be a reason why he can't try to do it. He has a hard time standing up while he's in it!

Ditto this. My cousin's son is a monkey and was climbing out of, onto and into everything. She got a crib tent and it works like a charm. Her son actually likes it and before bed he says, "mamamama! zhip me up!" (Mommy, zip me up.)

PIE thought about a tent but I had to different and got a crib with wavy rails.  I'm not sure it would work.  Our crib converts to a toddler bed so I think we may try that.  I'm just slightly terrified of him getting up in the middle of night or even before us in the morning and getting into something.  We have Child proofed his room but my kid is so curious that he finds danger in the safest places!  I just got a video monitor to help ease my mind.

Shan, the tent that my cousin has goes under the crib mattress and not just over the top of the crib. It's like a... tent... (ha!) but you put it in the crib without the mattress and then you put the mattress in the tent. This way they can't just pull the tent off.
