What do you say?

I had an interesting conversation with my psychologist yesterday. The guy is 65+.

He thinks I am addicted to the internet lol. I told him I was on it 9+ hours a day. Which I think is pretty common for people my age. I do everything with the internet. It's my landline (I pay for a skype number), my free cellphone (I use gmail for 99% of my phone calls because it's free), my TV, to stay in touch with family and friends back home and the one I have here who live 1h30 hours away, answer the million questions I have everyday, shop, read the news, Nest lol, listen to music, the radio.... I do pretty much everything with it and I would be lost without it.

I think since the guy is old, he might not understand how I could spend 9+ hours on it everyday. What about you?

Re: What do you say?

  • To me that seems like a lot.  I work 8 hours (no internet access at work), sleep 8 hours, that would be all of my non-working/sleeping time on the internet.

If I spend more then an hour a day I feel like I have spent too much time online.

  • I do spend 9+ hours on the internet but that is my job.  Outside of work, I would think 9+ is excessive.

I do check my phone a lot and browse the internet when I am waiting in line or relaxing in bed before sleep.  I do limit my time on the internet because I have a DS who is 16 months and I do think it is rude to be on the phone in front of company.  I do have days when I am on it a lot, especially when I am shopping around online for home decor.

  • 1) It's probably a generational thing.  He likely watches the news and his "programs" on TV at their programmed time.  For us it's more convenient to watch/read news or TV at our beck and call, which is provided through the internet.

    2) It's also a profession thing.  If he didn't spend his days talking to people about their problems and had an office job, he would likely spend just as much time online.

    3) He just doesn't get it because he doesn't know how the interwebz work and is still trying to the clear porn out of his browsing history so he wife doesn't find out! Or he doesn't get it because he hasn't yet discovered the world of internet porn Stick out tongue

ETA: Or the other cool things on the internet.  Also, it's different because you have family abroad--I spent a lot of time online when I was an expat to connect with family and friends.

It's not like if you didn't have the internet you'd die, right?  Like if you went away to a B&B with a fantasy SO, would you freak out without the internet?  Probably not.

XH and I spent a TON of time online because he was high and I was miserable and bored.  Bad marriages (in my experience) lead to a lot of time wasted online.

  • I spend most of my time online at work but for work stuff. I don't nest or do much else at work. I don't think I could spend 9 hours a day online for just personal stuff and I get told I am always online lol.

Lately I have been spending about a half hour a day online for personal stuff. On a weekend morning I will spend a few hours catching up on shows and stuff though.
