Gift ideas - neighbor who had baby

Our next door neighbor just had her 4th child.  We're neighborly friendly with them but not friends-friends.  She is a SAHM and has an 8, 6 and 4 year old boys....and just had a baby girl.  Besides getting a card, I wanted to do something else.  At first I was thinking some girly clothes b/c she's only had boys but then I was wondering if it was more 'neighborly' and useful to do something like bring over food (she has an entire family to feed).  Thing is....gah, I just don't feel like cooking them dinner.  I don't even cook myself dinner!

What should I do?  Cute outfit?  Maybe food, but not dinner?  Like a dozen bagels and cream cheese or something?  Just the card?  Suck it up and make dinner?

  • Gift certificate to a local restaurant so get the benefit of the food without having to actually cook it?

This is what I was thinking, only maybe if you have a place that delivers too, so they wouldn't have to pack up the clan and wrangle them all through the meal.

Love this idea but delivery isn't very common here.  I've looked in the past and the ones that do, don't do gift cards/certs.  I'd thought of this too (and also, personally really wish more places delivered - I miss NYC for that aspect so much!)
  • I don't know that I'd spend money on my neighbor, your a good one I guess ... is the house next to you on the other side for sale ?

I honestly, would maybe consider going through Jane clothes and giving her a box of girl stuff since you know she doesn't have any.

Our neighbors gave us stuff when Janie was born.  But, I didn't want to do anything that seemed to "much" which is why I was thinking of making something but then that seemed too personal (I have no idea what they like to eat, etc).  aaaaaaaand clearly I'm over-thinking.

The house across the street just sold and the other one was for rent.  Come on out!  I think the rental was $4K a month - that's good, right?  :P

  • What about something pretty easy like a make-ahead breakfast casserole for a weekend morning. You could assemble it Friday night, they put it in the fridge and then just bake it?

  • I was definitely thinking food. If you don't want to cook, you could put together a basket of easy to grab and eat stuff, like granola bars, fruit, etc. Or sending muffins or bagels is a good option, too.
  • Pending how much you want to spend you could do a set from Omaha steaks.

  • Thanks all.

Ended up getting a Gap Kids gift set of pink/white onesies and some socks.  The card (from Jane) said "Welcome to the neighborhood, Maeve, thought you might need some pink with all those brothers" :)

They were home when we dropped it off and were really appreciative - so I'm glad I did it.

  • I like to give cookie gift baskets when I'm not sure what the person would like. Everyone likes cookies, and they're good for any occasion. Cookies would be a nice treat for a new mom.
