**heatherkj** - re: baby gates

Just read  your blog.  Baby gates were the devil for me, lol.   We had banister issues and all sorts of issues.  Two thoughts for you:

Some of the gates like the kind you're looking at sell attachments that allw it to go around the spindles instead of the newel post.  LIke this.

What I found worked for us was:

(1) Cheapy removeable at the bottom.  Just really needs to be a deterrant and not as "strong" as a top-of-the-stair gate.  Bonus is we can move it around to other areas of the house if we want (i.e. sometimes we block off the kitchen or the office).

I liked this one (and I tried many) b/c one side has a 'rocker" arm that allows it to go over uneven walls/surfaces.

(2) Top of the stairs we have a retractable gate.   I don't know the exact one we have b/c the previous owners installed it but it's like this one.  Our top landing is super awkward and this is installed diagonally and it's amazing.  Rolls out of the way but is super strong.

  • Thanks, Megan! Yeah, we're going to consider a cheapy removable at the bottom. I haven't seen the one you posted before, so thanks for the rec.

The banister attachments/adapters are cool, and would be a perfect solution under normal circumstances, but since our banisters are loose/weak, we really can't use a tension mount either way. :(

Those retractable gates look very cool, and I like the idea of being able to let it roll up out of the way. A little pricey, but we'll have to see what happens with the other gates we're trying. If no luck, we might have to go that route. Thanks!

  • I now see that the Safety 1st gate can also be hardware mounted for the top of the stairs. Innnnnteresting! Thanks again.
