Need Arlington/Alexandria places to live ideas for a friend

I have a single female friend who is moving to the DC area for a job and she was looking for some advice on places to live in the Arlington/Alexandria area. She will be riding the metro to work and she'll be working in DC near Union Station (red line). Here are here ideal requirements and some more details on her situation -

* Ideally would like a 1 bedroom apartment
* Wants to pay around $1100 (but she's not sure what she can get in that price range so she is flexible...I'm assuming this is a bit low?)
* Needs to be within walking distance of a metro
* She will also have a car
* The max desired commute time is about an hour (taking the metro to Union Station)
* Would love a gym and/or a pool in the apartment complex but that's not a must
* Generally would like a sunny place that is quiet and in a safe area

I'm going to link her to this post so any advice or ideas you have would be much appreciated. If you have thoughts on specific apartment complexes or areas that you would recommend, that would be great. Thank you!

Re: Need Arlington/Alexandria places to live ideas for a friend

  • that price might be tough to meet if she's walking distance to the metro. but everything up and down wilson blvd (Ballston, Clarendon, Courthouse, etc) would be convenient location-wise. also, things tend to be cheaper in South Arlington, she should check out the apartments near Pentagon City and Pentagon Row.

It's been a while, but I used to work with some people who lived in River House, a big apartment complex across from Pentagon Row. The apartments are older, but less expensive and depending on the building, it's only a 5-10 min walk to the Pentagon City metro. also, there are shops and restaurants and a grocery store right there in Pentagon Row...it's pretty convenient.

  • I rented on Columbia Pike in Arlington once upon a time, and it was very convenient to downtown with bus service to Pentagon/Pentagon City.  There are a bunch of newly built rentals, as well as some older (possibly more cost effective) garden style apartments about a mile up from the Pentagon, and the neighborhood is really starting to blossom.

Even without being walkable to Metro, I was paying $1000 for a 1 BR in that area six years ago.  I'm not sure $1100 is feasible with her wants.

  • I had a friend that lived in Rosslyn (I think the complex was River East or something? It's the buildings on the corner of wilson & 110). I believe it was a studio condo she was renting & it was 850 (this was 5 years ago).  It was near Rosslyn metro & obviously really close to jogging trails, Gtown, etc.  Not sure about the particular amenities of the building

Basically, the moral of this story is to perhaps check out condo rentals as sometimes they can be cheaper than apartment rentals.

  • I used to commute from Pentagon City to Union Station and it wasn't bad at all. There are some apartments near the Metro, and also condos that people rent privately. I think she may be able to get a better rate if she rents a condo, but she'll probably need to increase her budget either way.

I have a friend who lived at Columbia Pike and Jefferson Street (Baileys Crossroads).  The bus goes straight down CP to the Pentagon.  Plus from there she could walk to grocery, shopping, etc.  Even with a car, it is nice to be in an area where you have a choice to walk to things.

  • Thanks everyone for the ideas. I appreciate it.
