Is it warm enough to snorkel year-round in Cairns?

We're booking a trip to Cairns, and are trying to work around federal holidays.  Right now we're considering the weeks that fall on 4th of July, and Labor Day.  (Basically their winter and spring.)

Is it warm enough to snorkel year-round in Carns?

Re: Is it warm enough to snorkel year-round in Cairns?

  • i was told by native aussies to get to cairns before october and when i had to wait for december, i completely understood their advice. it was insanely humid, the water was warmer than a bath, and there was just no relief from the heat. also, it was jellyfish season, you absolutely do not want to go snorkeling at that time. i *think* july-sept would be ideal and i'm sure some other nesties will chime in too. if i ever go back to cairns, it would be at that time for sure.

  • We're heading to Cairns (Lizard Island, actually) in mid August. After doing a ton of research, it seems to be best to be there around August-September before it gets crazy hot and before the jellies come out!

  • I went in October 2000. It was stinger season (just starting I think). I did not swim off the beach for this reason, though they did have the nets up. I did go on a snorkeling trip. I rented a shortie wetsuit mainly to keep from getting sunburned. Turned out the slight floatation in it served me well to stay out snorkeling the whole time without getting tired.
  • I went in early July 2002 and it was cool but we just wore wetsuits.
  • I went labor day week and wore shorts and went swimming.   I wore a shortie wetsuit diving, but only for comfort with the gear, the water felt fine even at depth.

  • We were in Port Douglas in July 2009- it was 90 and no stingers. We wore wet suits on one trip out to the reef and no wetsuit the second time and were perfectly comfortable.
  • We were there in August and the snorkeling was fabulous. We went out two days.  It wasn't HOT, but was very pleasant.  The water was a little chilly, so, we wore the full body suits that they had available.  I don't think I would go during their summer because of the stingers.
  • I went in mid July, wore a short wet suit and it was fine.
