pumping gas...poll

Do you wait til you are on empty, or do you fill up sooner (like at 1/4 tank)?

Regular gas?  Mid grade? Premium?

Do you ever "wait" so that DH has to fill up for you?

Cash or credit?

*On a side note, gas stations need those outdoor space heaters.  I HAD to get gas this morning (been putting it off and was past empty, really) and it was 15 degrees outside, before the windchill.  Or someone needs to figure out a safe way to do an indoor or drive through type gas station like the car washes... ha.

Re: pumping gas...poll

  • In the Winter DH doesn't like us to go below a half-tank before filling up because his Mom and Dad always said that there can be condensation (or something...) in the tank and cause damage.  I have no idea if it's true but he's adamant about it so there you go.   Otherwise, I wait until it's much much lower :)

We just use regular.  We don't have cars that require anything else.

ETA: I use credit for nearly everything and pay it off in full every month.  yay points!

  • I'll fill up sooner if I'm traveling, otherwise it's when it's close to E or the light is on.

I hate getting gas and usually wait for DH to fill up since we switch cars so much. Plus, he's a gas hustler with our Kroger gas points so he has a system that I stay away from. I can't tell you how much excitement there was in December when we were buying gift cards from Krogers and had a huge discount on gas. DH and his friends were sending each other pictures of their gas receipts after all their discounts lol.

    We always use credit/debit.

    Happiest place on Earth!

  • I fill up when it is on the E or past it.  LOL.  I get regular and the only "waiting" for DH is when we have racked up enough for $0.20 off for the grocery store gas and then DH and I will try to both fill up at once to get the biggest discount.  He actually ran out of gas on I-66 about a month ago because he was waiting to fill up with me and get the $0.20 off.

  • I wait until the little digital thing says, 10 miles to empty. DH hates me for it and always yells at me about how expensive fuel pumps are.

I get regular now, the Lincoln took premium, and that sucked!!

Yes I wait and conviently tell DH too take my care when it is on E, so he has to fill it. Of course I don't tell him that before hand. ;)

    Always debit.

  • I fill up when I'm on 1/4 tank. I may fill up with 1/2 tank depending on if I'm driving to work that day. I hate getting gas on the way home and with a 50 mile commute each way, a bad traffic jam could make things interesting.

I only use regular. I've never had a car I cared about enough to even check if anything higher was recommended, let alone actually use it.

I don't have to wait for H to fill it up. When I'm going to work, all I have to say in the mornings normally is that I have to get gas before I leave, and he'll usually take my car to fill it up.

We use our bank cards for everything and never have cash on us.

  • Usually I fill up at 1/4 of a tank.  My first car - scratch that - VAN was very needy and hated to go below 1/4 of a tank of gas and would sometimes not start.  So it's just habit now.

I fill up my own car.  Credit vs. debit depends on which station I'm getting it at and if it's cheaper to use "cash" vs. "credit".

Regular all the way.  I would kind of love a diesel.

  • I usually go somewhere between 1/4 tank and the light coming on. I need to start filling up sooner now just to be safe since the hospital is 40 miles from where I work. I always use credit as I never have cash. And DH almost never drives my car (and certainly not without me), so he almost never fills it up.

We do this too. I always feel unethical about it and I don't know why lol

  • we usually wait til we are close to empty or our grocery gas rewards are going to expire (every 100 bucks you spend gets you 10 cents off a gallon).

    Mid Grade for our prius

I sometimes wait for DH to do it, he usually pays for it since I pay for daycare and he handles the car stuff.

usually on our debit card, sad that I have never paid cash for gas

  • I live in a rural area, so there aren't gas stations as often as is convenient, so I usually just fill up as needed whenever I'm somewhere I can.  Sometimes that's between a 1/2 and 1/4 tank, and sometimes I'm driving on fumes w/the low fuel light on.  Just depends on where I've been driving that week.

I always use regular unleaded.  I drive a 2004 Subaru Legacy, so regular is just fine.

He almost never uses my car unless we're going to dinner somewhere or something.  He gets really annoyed if he's driving and I left it on empty.

Debit card whenever possible because then I don't have to haul Sawyer out of the car to go in and pay, but some of the gas stations around here (including the 2 closest to my house) are still the older style pumps that require you to pay inside.  I avoid them at all costs if Sawyer is with me.

And a side-note:  PA (at least the area where I'm from) is very much a pump & then pay state when using cash.  I'm always confused when I travel with the paying policies at gas stations.  Are you ever able to just fill up the tank & stop where it stops, or do you have to either pump a set cash amount?  I guess you could go in and get the change, but sheesh!  I would never pay cash if I had to do that, either.

  • It has been my habit to wait until a 1/4 tank or less before filling up.  That was fine when I had my previous cars, but now I have a TDI (diesel) and I found out the hard way that some areas don't sell diesel at many places.  So I'm learning to fill up sooner.

DH doesn't drive, so it is all me for filling up.  When travelling to his parents house in NJ, I ALWAYS get gas before leaving NJ since they pump it for you!  Plus it is always cheaper in NJ than in PA - so it is a win-win for me.

Pay at the pump with either credit or debit - especially when I have Ryan with me.

It sucks that a bunch of the grocery stores have the gas discount cards, but none of the participating stations sell diesel fuel :(  So I never get to use my discounts.

I got bumped by a lady backing up so her husband could get the discount.  She got out and said "You hit me!"  I was pumping my gas at the time.  No damage, but I was not happy.

DH never takes my car, but I don't mind pumping.  I pay cash and use regular.  I drive until it's empty, even though I've heard I shouldn't.   I try and wait until I'm going somewhere because I live in the most expensive gas area of town.

  • I usually fill up when my gas light comes on. Between when I used to carpool or take transit and my now short commute I rarely pay attention to my gas hand. All the stores I go to for groceries and stuff are all less than a mile away so I usually on pay attention when the light comes on or if I'm going somewhere farther away.

    I use regular

H has a work truck and he's just as bad as me about gas. This is what happens when you live directly behind a gas station for a few years.

Credit. I rarely go into the gas station.

Before we moved here, we used to live directly behind a gas station ( like 500 feet) so between that and my driving patterns- I'm really bad about remembering to put gas in my car. I know its bad for the car,  but I never think about and I know that during my normal day, should the light come on I can get to a station ASAP.

I think it's an un-written rule that you always fill up before leaving NJ, lol.  Cheaper and full serve!  It's the best thing Jerz has going for it.  Well, that and the shore :)

DH is similar--he doesn't like the tanks lower than 1/4 tank during the winter. I think if the tanks are low + condensation + low temps = fuel line can freeze? Something like that. Even though he's told me this since we moved to OH, I still run it down till it's almost on E. I try to remember to fill it back up before the light comes on.

  • DH and I fight about this all the time-- sorta/ kinda related.

We both wait until the "50 miles til empty" warning signal to fill up, and we usually fill up right after that.  I stop at a station with a decent price and fill the tank all the way.  DH NEVER fills the tank all the way.  He will put in $20, $30 dollars here and there.  Kills me!  I have never gotten a legit answer about why he does this, but it makes me mad because gas prices fluctuate so much and it seems like we're constantly stopping for gas because he does that.  I don't get it.

  • I wait until the gas light comes on.  I always use regular gas.  I don't mind pumping the gas.  I always use my debit card... I have never actually paid cash when having to do self-serve cause I rather just pay at the pump.
  • We always use debt. I wait til the gas light comes on, unless I notice it's getting low and am passing a gas station. It's all about convenience for me.

DH's truck takes diesel, my car is reg, and our commuter car is premium.

  • I usually wait until it's almost on E. My car beeps at me when I have about 50miles left on the tank and I try to fill it before it hits 25 miles left. In the winter I try to fill it up before it beeps at me b/c I don't want to get stuck in the frigid cold needing to pump gas. Our HIGH temp today was 3 degrees, with a windchill of about -15...glad I got gas on Monday!

Both of us almost always pay at the pump, sometimes we'll pay inside if it's cheaper. I can't remember a time I've ever used cash for gas.

We both use regular and DH will fill up my car on occasion, if we're taking my car and I'm out of gas.

  • We usually use credit, but sometimes cash. I use regular in my car and DH needs premium in his car. I always fill up on payday regardless of how much is in my tank, but in between I wait until I'm on empty.

  • DH and I both wait until it's empty, or at least until the light is on.

My car takes premium, DH's truck takes regular.

We both drive so much and rarely switch cars that I can never "wait" for DH to fill it up. However, if we're driving together and need gas he'll get out and fill it up.

Always use debit...going inside would take forever lol.
