I'm a social retard.

So I spent several hours swing dancing/waltzing/blah blah with this guy last night, and he expressed his interest in rock climbing, and kept asking me questions and keeping the conversation going... I got his number because we talked about climbing together, but what the eff now??

This is so embarrassing, but I'm awkward and don't know how to make friends. I grew up in a small town where I inherited them! Haha. One of the girls at work told me to wait for him to text, another said if I don't hear from him today to hit him up...

He really did seem interested to go, so is it too forward to send him something like "Next time we end up at swing I'll teach you how to two-step, but would you want to go climbing in the mean time?"

...oh dear god, I sound so young and stupid, so feel free to laugh at me. But I'm starting out in a new city, and feeling a little lost. I don't want to seem weird or needy! I just want friends.

    You call it.

I promise you this guy is not even thinking about or analyzing this situation at all.. and you really don't need to either.

  • This is just a friend, right? No need to jump into anything right now.

I don't mean this in a snarky way, so please don't think I'm being mean.

Yes, I should have clarified! I can only boulder if I'm by myself, so I'd love someone to climb with so I can get back to top rope. He mentioned he'd gone with friends and wanted to make it more of a hobby and I told him if he was up for going I'm looking for a climbing buddy.

That's partially why I'm asking. All the girls at work are treating it like I'm out man-hunting, but I'm not looking for a date, I don't want a boyfriend, I'd simply like someone to go with that's not going to drop me off a wall and kill me. (And he backflipped me so I know he can hold a fall!)

  • I think a simple text next time you plan to go wall climbing would be totally fine.  Just something like ~ Hey, planning to go wall climbing Tues evening if you'd like to meet me.

I'm glad you had a great time dancing!

  • Just call him and tell him exactly what you said. It's simple and what you want to do and he's into rock climbing.

Or be like "I was curious, what does your weekend schedule look like? I was going to take you up on your rock climbing skills"

  • "Hey, if you were serious about rock climbing with me, let me know when would work for you. I'm dying to do something beside bouldering*."

*not sure if that is correct usage, lol

That way it is pretty clear it's all about the climbing.  And I would text, I hate awkward phone conversations.

I agree with all this! :) Glad you had a good time dancing!

  • Text him you are thinking of going rock climbing whatever day next week and would he like to join you.

No worries, I'm sure he'll want to go! Let us know how it turns out.
