Meal Ideas for Friends with New Baby

Our friends just had their second baby and I would like to take them a meal that they can freeze and reheat when ready.

I am sooo not a make ahead and freeze person, so I have no clue.

Give me your ideas for easy meals that can be made ahead like this for someone.  Links or recipes appreciated.

Re: Meal Ideas for Friends with New Baby

  • I make this neopolitan baked ziti for a lot of new moms b/c it reheats so well. I've been asked to make it again, so they must like it :)

The only change is that I add around a half a jar of sauce (so that there's more liquid when it reheats) and sometimes I'll add italian sausage if the mom's not into vegetarian meals.

    Happiest place on Earth!

  • Lasagna heats/reheats really well.  I think Chili does too.
  • Meal aside, my work sent me one of those fruit arrangements when I had Zac. That was fabulous. I don't know if it's because I had surgery, but something about eating extremely healthy and lite was very much desired by me. It was perfect to munch on for a few days.

Other than that, Lasagna or a crock pot meal would be fabulous.

  • Any baked pasta.  Either assemble and bake (making sure its liquidy as Jaay said) OR.....assemble and don't bake.  It depends on whether or not they rather reheat in the oven or microwave.

    Chili

    Stew or hearty soup

Roast....as long as it slow cooked in liquid, it will freeze and reheat well.

I would avoid rice dishes, or anything with white meat chicken.....they really dry out.

  • I have made & frozen both of these recipes for myself a couple of times now, and they are both delicious!  They will be my new go-to meal for making to give to others from now on.

Sweet Potato Chili (It notates making in a slow cooker, but I just make it on the stove-top & let it simmer until the sweet potatoes are cooked.  Also, the sweet potatoes don't really lend a distinctive flavor to the chili, but they do add a nice background flavor while adding lots of extra nutrition.):

Sweet & Moist Cornbread (When freezing, double it up with a few layers of aluminum foil, then plastic wrap.  It's really good with jalapenos added, too.):

  • No frozen meal ideas from me, but I agree with Trickey on the fruit arrangement. We received and edible arrangement from the ILs after having Lincoln and it was the best snack ever. It was so yummy and easy to snack on, plus it lasted a few days. I now buy them as gifts for most family and friends for special occasions.

  • I just thought of this, too.  When we had Sawyer, we received a lot of dinner items, but SIL brought of a package of breakfast stuff that was really nice to have.  There was a bag of different bagels, two kinds of cream cheese, some muffins, a package of Dunkin Donut coffee, some citrus fruits, and a bottle of wine (not for breakfast, but still nice).

  • I second the breakfast idea - waffles, pancakes and muffins can all be frozen. I know heather has some different recipes on her blog.
