VENT: Insurance

I was just looking at my bank statement, and the insurance I had before I was on DH's is STILL charging me.  I'd bought an individual plan in 2010 and cancelled in August 2011.

Except they kept making the debit from my account.  Called again in the fall about cancelling.  Policy was supposed to expire in October.  Still taking money from my account.  Called again.  Just looked at my most recent statement, and there was ANOTHER $80 withdrawal.  DH is calling them now because I'm pissed and someone would get quite the earfull from me.

  • I swear, I don't know how some companies stay in business.

  • The exact same thing happened to Rocky when he got his new job and cancelled his individual plan insurance.

I don't really know what to say, except that I'm sorry!  Definitely not what you want to deal with on a Friday... I hope that you get through to someone today and get it squared away.

This is exactly why I refuse to pay bills online or do automatic withdrawals.  I had the same issues with my account and it's next to impossible to get them to sort out the problem.  I'd rather pay the extra money in stamps to mail a check and know that they can't take more than I authorize them to.   What a headache!

  • Is it possible to put a block on the withdrawl from your bank?

  • OH man, I have a love/hate relationship with autopay. It's so convenient but then companies pull stuff like this. I hope your hubby is able to straighten this out, and that they refund all your money!

  • Wow, they've been charging you all this time after you cancelled?  That's definitely a problem!  If you signed up for auto-withdrawals using a Visa debit card (or something similar), you can dispute the charge at any time by calling your bank and filing a formal dispute.  You can explain that you cancelled this insurance, and you want your money back for all of the times they inappropriately withdrew your money since August.  Even if you just gave the insurance company your checking account number for automatic withdrawals, you can call the bank and dispute the charges, but you don't have as much protection as when you use a Visa branded card (from what I understand).  Sometimes you have to go that route to ensure that the problem is solved, but having a bank go after your insurance company for fradulent withdrawals carries more weight than you alone telling them to stop (sad as it may be).
  • DH fixed it, and they will be refunding the money!  He's much better at those things than I am.

I have no idea why I set it up to withdraw from my bank account rather then my credit card.
