Embroidery??

Hello Ladies,

I currently have an Etsy shop selling vinyl-decorated gifts and etched glass. I would LOVE to learn to sew and embroider to be able to expand my shop selection (and for my nieces/nephews/and future children's sakes, lol). I've found this machine:

http://www.amazon.com/Brother-SE400-Computerized-Embroidery-Machine/dp/B003AVMZA4/ref=wl_it_dp_o_npd?ie=UTF8&coliid=I2AEPWE4CV6MT8&colid=1R7LLIV42G2RA

I was wondering what those of you with sewing/embroider experience knew about this machine? Another question I have is what else I would need to get started? Obviously I'll need supllies other than the machine itself and I'd like to start pricing so that I'll be ready to get the machine and anything else that I would need all at once.

TIA!!!!

Re: Embroidery??

  • I just bought my SE400 refurbed from Overstock with a coupon code that brought it to $272 shipped. All my machines (2 other sewing machines and a serger) were Overstock refurbs and all were really brand new (with the same warranty period you get with a new machine). It will be here tomorrow- I ordered it Wednesday night.

It should be a nice machine to learn on- I really did my learning on my Brother XR9000 which is very similar to the sewing half of the SE400. You'll obviously need embroidery thread for the embroidery side of things, stabilizer, applique scissors if you plan to do applique embroidery. All the other things I can think of our covered in the FAQs at the top of the board.

You can find tons of free embroidery projects out there, but, I plan to buy some digitizing and editing software (probably Embird modules). I'll also buy the multi-position larger hoop accessory at some point.

  • The SE-400 will only embroider a 4x4 area, so take that into consideration. It's not a bad machine for a hobbyist but the overall quality still isn't that great. I have a 350 (same as a 400, except for the USB port) and it's had numerous problems. I don't use it anymore since I upgraded machines.
