Talk to me about Philadelphia...

S and I have never actually been there...but there's a very nice offer on the table for him that would be about 15 miles outside the city.

Gimme the low down....

Re: Talk to me about Philadelphia...

  • There is a lot to do, for sure.  Good access to Jersey for beaches and not that far from either DC or NYC for weekend trips.

Traffic is ridic. getting into/out of the city, but if he didn't have to drive in that traffic, it wouldn't be too bad.

I'm not a Philly fan just because of the sports rivalry, but one of my friends lives there and loves it.

  • How about Seattle? ;) I know, I'm super helpful.

That depends what you're used to - it's nothing compared to NYC!

I feel like the suburbs can vary a lot. I really like the area north of Philly in PA - the area to the east in NJ? Not so much.

touche!   Though I've dealt with my share of DC traffic too!

  • Bryn Athyn is wonderful. The neighborhoods are really nice and it is a great place for a family with young children. Willow Grove as an area itself is great as far as shopping, restuarants, and entertainment go, but housing & neighborhoods aren't really the best.

An area that is very close to those places that would be IMO the best recommendations for living is switching from Montgomery County to Lower Bucks County. Some of the areas to look at would be Huntingdon Valley, Warminster, Warrington, and Richboro.  If you really want to stay in Mont Co. I would also recommend Ambler, Blue Bell, and North Wales.

I can answer any questions you have about the area given I live/work/go to school here and am very familiar with the my surroundings! PM or FBPM me and I can go into more specifics if you want.

  • I grew up in South Jersey in a suburb of Philly.  In terms of PA vs. Jersey, you will have lower taxes in Philly, but better schools an amenities in Jersey, so I would recommend not ruling out South Jersey.  I would recommend the Burlington County Area if you consider South Jersey.

  • *This is going back 10 years to when I was looking for colleges* Philadelphia is the only place that when my family took a vacation and got there, we checked out the same night and said the hotel could keep our money. We ended up staying in the suburbs and enjoyed the experience a lot more. Definitely a good amount of sites to see and if you stick to those areas you'll be good, but take a wrong turn and there are some really sketchy neighborhoods. Not a place I would ever go back to visit after having seen it once. I'm sure there are some great areas, but there are a lot of other places I'd rather be.
