Couples Shower Theme (google isn't helping)

I'm helping to host a couples shower for my friend and her fiance in June, and we're tossing around themes.  We don't want to do anything girly (obviously).  Mainly the guests at the party will be other couples, but not everyone.  So far all we've come up with are:

Beach

Luau/Hawaiian

Backyard BBQ

Google and TK really aren't helping.  I mean, a "sports" shower?  Yeah... don't think so...

I need some fresh ideas please! TIA!!

Re: Couples Shower Theme (google isn't helping)

  • I got some theme ideas by searching for invitations, oddly enough.  If there's an invitation for it, it must be a pretty good theme.

You can steal my fiesta idea - I'm totally ok with that :)

    Others I ran across:

    Mad Men/'60s

Stock the bar (I think it'd go really well with a Mad Men theme or on its own)

    Wine & cheese

Nautical if that'd be appropriate for the couple

And truthfully, the only reason I'm doing a theme party at all is because these guests will have been to 5+ of my usual, non-theme parties.  The reason I dislike themes so much is because they're so often forced or corny, but walking the line between doing too much ("ok, we get it already, they're the 'perfect pair,' enough with the tchotchkes") and not doing enough ("oh, that little ____ for a theme just sad") is hard.  You can't ever go wrong with a color or a season for a theme with great food, great flowers, and great dishes & linens.

If I was going to throw a summer couples shower, I'd use these for my insp pics and run with it:

This one's my current favorite - love that tablecloth!  There's a summer in Provence feeling here that I might nod to with wine and food.

These are all on my entertaining pinboard if you want to repin any of them.

  • If the couple is really into sports I don't really see an issue with that theme.  Is there something they both really like?  Or maybe something about where they are honeymooning?  How they met?

If none of that is tripping you trigger then I like the idea of just picking some color and running with it.

  • "Bonnie & Clyde" theme/roaring twenties

    Black and white party

French/Paris theme (I have see a lot of Paris things recently)

Clambake or crawfish boil, gumbo, jumbalaya - New Orleans, Mardi Gras

Also try searching for engagement parties, since they are couple-centric, more so than bridal showers

Those pics are amazing!  And a little intimidating lol  I don't want to go crazy theme-y either, so I think we're just mainly looking for a theme to help guide us, not necessarily "make" the party.  I'm going to throw the fiesta theme in the mix of suggestions with the other girls.  Thanks!

  • Theme ideas:

    Picnic

Combine their ethnicities, like if she is Irish and he is Chinese, have the main dinner be Irish food and all the appetizers be Chinese food.

Hometown favorites, serve the traditional foods from their hometown.  If it was me, Toledo, we'd serve tony packo hot dogs.  :)

    Wine tasting/ Champagne tasting
