Anyone build a home recently?
we just planned the layout with the architect and super excited. what did you choose first? anything you would do differently or change?
Re: Anyone build a home recently?
We are almost done with the building process - close in 10 days! (Can you tell I'm excited?)
I thought the most important thing we did was to measure all the rooms in our old house to see how they would compare to the actual size of the new house rooms per the blue prints. That's how we decide what rooms to extend (for example - I thought the Family Room would be fine, but then when we measured, we realized it would be too narrow for our tastes and we did a 4 foot extension).
We considered building but decided to buy in a different town for their school system (and we couldn't afford to build there). But my father is a contractor so we did look at plans and talked about what we wanted to price it out if we could find land we liked.
Things we knew we wanted: hardwood throughout, vinyl siding, granite countertops (in kitchen and bathrooms), and garage on the same level as the house (rather than under).
Incidentally, the house we bought had all of those things even though it was built in the 1800s haha
thanks ladies! yes we did measure, very good idea and extended our living area 3ft also
we also were moving out of town but we have such great friends and made more great friends that it didn't seem right and we literally had this house fall into our laps, we never thought we'd be able to build in our area (its expensive all around) and now we are still so close to the beach and the city and now we are actually ON the bay our new town, which is part of our old town - weird, i know, is considered 'coastal living' lol and have tons of kids and friends in our neighborhood with baseball fields and playground at the end of our street which was huge for us.
how long did it take to build your house? we should be in ours in june.
We broke ground in September. DH and FIL are building it themselves with the help of some friends. We should be done this summer.
We just picked out windows. We need to finalize flooring next so they can make the stairs.
We added length and width to the house to squeeze in a mud room and half bath on the main floor.
