Bottle/food transition at 12 months

We will soon be transitioning P to whole milk, but I'm at a loss on how to transition him from bottles or when I do it?  Does he still continue to get milk at his normal "bottle" times, but just in a sippy cup?  Are we supposed to be transitioning him out of bottles at certain times?  Obviously, I'll discuss this in depth at his 12 month visit, but I'm trying to get an idea of what's to come.....thanks ladies!

Re: Bottle/food transition at 12 months

  • We quit bottles cold turkey on her 1st birthday and just started giving milk with meals.  We would also do milk in between meals if she didn't drink it all.  We offered water at other times of the day, too.  We started giving a little bit of milk in a sippy at meal times around 11 months to get her used to it.

  • Bottle times go away and you just serve 3 meals and 2-3 snacks every day with milk or water in the sippy.

The meals take the place of bottles and milk just supplements nutrition like any other food. :)

  • We are getting ready to start this as well. For Ella it was pretty easy- we just started offering milk in her sippy at mealtimes. Actually about a week before her first birthday we did half milk/half formula in her sippy to transition and she did fine. We did give her a sippy of milk before bed until probably 15 months or she would wake up hungry. I think Brody is going to be a bit more of a challenge because he LOVES his bottles. He is on 4 bottles a day right now and while he CAN drink formula from a sippy he doesnt drink much of it. We are planning on trying a little milk this week and see how he does since he had milk protein intolerance and go from there. My goal is to at least eliminate the first three bottles and replace them with milk at meals/snacks. If we have to hang onto the bedtime bottle for a bit I guess that's okay :)

  • I said I was going to transition G cold turkey to bottles at 1yr; however that was a huge battle. We let her lead us and at about 14months she was ok with being done with the bottle and used a sippy.

We did B,L,D with a sippy of milk. She got a bottle (I think...) about 30 minutes before nap and 30 minutes before bed. We weaned the before nap one first and then weaned the before bed one. It was a comfort thing for her. She would cuddle with us on the couch, drink her bottle and then go to nap. Or cuddle with bottle, brush her teeth, book, bed.

Alot of people had success taking bottles away cold-turkey, but that didn't work for us. I stressed out about it a lot back then; but now I realize that was stupid of me. We let her tell us when she was ready and she easily transitioned to sippies when she was ready.

  • We let DS wean himself down to just a morning and bedtime bottle. Then we went cold turkey at about 14 months and he did fine with it.

With DD she's already given it up during the day. She prefers the cup. She still like a bottle when she wakes up. I don't think she'd miss it if we took it away, but she's on the smaller side so I still like the extra calories she gets from it.

We just started giving milk at lunch/dinner times in a sippy. The more solids they eat the less they seem to care for the bottle. I know a lot of people try to go by 12 months. But I never saw the need to push them. I didn't want them to still have a bottle at 3 years or anything, but it seems once they get used to the sippys they don't have the need for the bottle anymore.

  • Our doc said not to worry about getting rid of the bottle right away at 12 months.  He said by 15 months they should be done with it.  Don't rush it if he's not ready :)
  • We did milk in the bottle at meal times for a few weeks, so she was used to drinking milk.  But then she refused the sippy or regular cup at school, if she saw the bottle.  that's when we decided to take them away cold turkey and she did just fine.

Dd2 is going to be a bigger challenge, I think :/
