Retinal Migraine

I had one today (not knowing what it was until after an emergency appointment at Wilmer)...very scary and I panicked big time. I never even heard of these, has anyone here experienced them?

Re: Retinal Migraine

  • Step daughter did last year right after Christmas. I feel terribly but we didn't really believe that she couldn't see at first. We thought she was just trying to get attention and were "testing" her before we realized there really was something wrong. After that I was very scared and we couldn't get her in the eye dr til the next day.

  • well I was crying and on the phone with my husband and I realized that it was now something different I was seeing in the other eye, and then it went away...so that honestly made me feel like I was crazy (I work in psych and feel like temporary blindness sounds like a malingering symptom). And as am trying to describe it to my husband, my mom, my coworker...it just doesn't sound believable.  But when I described it to the eye doctor, she knew exactly what I was talking about! I can see where you would question a kid telling you this! I kept trying to talk myself out of it (like I need to clean my contact again)

  • Are these also known as occular migraines? I had two about 7-8 years ago. The first time it was freaky and when I asked my mom she thought I had a detached retina. The 2nd time I called the Dr and after seeing my he told me what it was and that they were typically caused by red wine, smoking or cheese. I wasn't s a big red wine drinker, but I did smoke so I figured that was the culprit. I haven't had one since.

  • Yes, occular migraine and opthalamic? migraine as well

Funny, I love red wine and cheese but can't say I've had any in a few weeks  (well cheese here and there like parmesan cheese on spaghetti)

  • Yep, my mom and I both have them.  I have been having them since high school.  It was freaky, but didn't hurt.  They usually went away quickly, so I didn't realize it wasn't normal until years later.

  • I think part of the reason I panicked is my dad developed a blood clot in his optic nerve and he has completely lost most of the vision in that eye. So when I couldn't see...I thought the same thing was happening to me
  • Wow, that sounds really scary? What exactly does that feel like? Do you get a Migraine Headache too?

I drink a lot of red wine .. and last night I had cheese fondue and wine... all the stuff that apparently can trigger this. Tongue Tied
