Best travel books for Paris and London?

I've heard Lonely Planet and Rick Steven books are good... any others?

Re: Best travel books for Paris and London?

  • We just went to London over Thanksgiving and used the Rick Steves guidebook. We found it to be very helpful!!

  • Will second a recommendation for Rick Steves.  He's been called simplistic-not by me-but truly, thinking just showing up in a foreign country is adventure enough without having to figure everything out yourself.

Arriving in CDG airport- Paris from an overnight flight can be a little daunting, Rick walked me straight to the ticket dispenser for RER B where I was able to get a train into Paris for 11 euro (?) as opposed to worrying about hiring a service or paying a large sum for a cab.

He and I spent a very happy morning in Pere LaChaise cemetary with his self-guided walking tour and his Paris map was invaluable for a woman born without a sense of direction.

  • Rick Steves, Rick Steves, Rick Steves.

I thought his book was invaluable for our trip to Paris. It really helped us out. The guide for the Lourve was great.

  • DK Eyewitness series. Used them for London and Paris. Have 2 more for Vienna and Munich for next trip.

They break the city down by section, have maps, and have the metro map system on the inside cover.

  • Another Rick Steves fan. We used his London and Paris book for our trip in November and both were great.

I second DK Eyewitness. I think they are the best to use when you are actually out and about. Some of the other travel books are good for preparing your trip. but I think hands down Eyewitness books are best to use when you are in the location. I always bring it with me when I'm walking around and they are SO helpful.

This along with another vote for Rick Steves.  I think if you have Rick Steves' books as well as the DK ones, you're good to go for just about any location.  The DK books come with really fabulous maps.  Their Top 10 series all come with pocket sized maps that usually have a map of the local public transportation (for Paris it's the Metro; for London the Tube) on the reverse side.  Plus, the DK books are just really visually appealing and fun to look through both before and after your trip.  Rick Steves' is fabulous for self-guided tours (the walks he outlines in all his books are great.  He's never led me on a boring or unenjoyable walk/tour) and that means you can save money (don't have to buy the audio guides at every tourist stop and you can do your own walking tour instead of paying a hefty price tag for a hired one).
