Nut allergy? Almond allergy?

Hi ladies! I've been super busy so I haven't been around much...Wish I had more time to spend on here!!

Last night I found out the hard way I have a almond allergy. I ate a hand full of almonds on my way home from work and 30-45 mins later I had problems breathing, throat & tongue got huge.. Long story short I had to have a neighbor take me to the urgent care. Thank god they were home! I spent 4 hours in urgent care until I was stable enough to go home. Dr said I have a dangerous allergy to almonds and to stay away from all nuts in general for a while and almonds indefinitely.

Anyone else have a nut or almond allergy? What do I need to watch out for? I am so afraid to eat anything now :-(  TIA

Re: Nut allergy? Almond allergy?

  • Oh my goodness, I'm sure that was so scary! I don't have a nut allergy, so I'm no help, but I just wanted to say I'm glad you're ok. I wouldn't do well with that kind of allergy- I love peanut butter too much.

  • Nicole,

I saw your post on facebook about allergies.  I'm sorry!  I unfortunately have little information on the issue, but I wanted to say that I'm glad that you're alright!!

I did ask Dr. Google about almond allergies and this website looks like it gives a very brief overview:

    http://www.food-info.net/uk/intol/almond.htm#5

and this one had a more in-depth description:

    http://www.allergicchild.com/tree_nut_allergies.htm

I tried to see if there was a way to easily google items that almonds are a secret ingredient, but I didn't have a lot of luck.  I would suggest though, that you stay away from Thai food and probably Indian food, because the nut is used a lot in those.  My ex-SIL had a bad reaction eating cous-cous because there were cashews in it at a restaurant.

  • I'm glad you are alright, nut allergies can be really bad. I don't have one, but my FIL does. He does ok for the most part. Your H should try things that you think may have nuts in them, particularly when you're at parties where everyone brings a dish. My MIL has a well trained palette for tasting nuts after years of experience. And when you go out to eat let them know about your allergy and ask. If the waiter doesn't seem very sure, ask to speak to the manager or chef. I know it seems crazy but they've never cared and understand the seriousness of it. It depends on how senstive you are, but food packaging has improved greatly as well, many items will let you know if it is prepared with or comes in contact with peanut/nut oils. Also, I can't remember if you guys are thinking about having kids, but allergies cann be passed down, so you may want to be careful early on as well until you know for sure. Oh, and not sure if the doctor gave you an epi-pen but you may want to always keep that handy just in case and benadryl as well.
  • I'm allergic to almonds!!!!

The biggest thing I've found to look out for is some bath products contain almonds. They may or may not effect you but it's definitely something to look out for because it can cause skin irritation.

Also if you buy any premade foods/dinner always check the ingredients for "may contain nuts" because that can end badly!

I'm sorry you found out the tough way. I've been there and it's way scary. I agree with ogrady definitely carry and epi pen and benedryl. They've saved my butt on several occassions!

  • Oh that's horrible!!! I'm so sorry that happened to you :( Lot's of people have nut allergies and you can get a blood test at an allergist to see what all you are allergic too. My whole family has an array of random allergies and we go to an allergist for bloodwork, ha.
  • Thanks ladies! Definitely a scary few hours. The Dr didn't want to give me an epi shot because I had chest tightness and pain. She said that too many people have heart attacks from epi pens. I do have one for emergencies and will be adding benedryl to my purse. I had my dad call my hubby who's out of town to tell him what was going on. I knew if I called H I would have freaked him out even more..

Thanks for the links! I will look at those and see what I can learn. I'm sad I will have to avoid most asian foods for a while because of peanut oil :-( and PBJ's Thanks for the reminder on checking beauty products. I read that somewhere today but forgot to check all my products. I'm just thankful this happened while I was home and now while we were on vacation in Mexico!!

Everybody I know that has a nut allergy can have peanut oil, so hopefully that will be the case for you. Sorry this happened.  I can't imagine having a nut allergy.  Don't forget- a lot of candy bars are processed in the same areas where nut bars are processed, so be sure to check the wrapper.

  • Thank you! I just went to the store to buy brownie mix and ice cream.... It took me 20 minutes to find ice cream that didn't have a nut warning on it and brownie mix that was safe. This is going to be a challenge :-) Like H said it's a good opportunity for us to get back to really clean eating and not going out to eat much at all.
