Online French-English dictionary

What online French-English dictionary do you use?  I've been using www.french-linguistics.co.uk for French-English translations, but I've been finding that it's missing a lot of words that are in my le Robert & Collins.  Can you recommend something that is more thorough?

I've been using Lexilogos.com for French definitions, but sometimes I just need the English word when I come across something while reading.

Re: Online French-English dictionary

  • I like wordreference.com often if they don't have the word or saying I'm looking for there is often the answer in their forum.
  • www.wordreference.com seems to be pretty good

  • Thanks! I'll try that one.
  • I use Google translate, LOL.

  • I'm a professional translator and I use wordreference.com a lot. In some cases, I've had to look at specialized dictionaries (legal, etc.), but I can generally find what I need on that site.

Now I'd like to know if there's a VISUAL print dictionary you recommend? I have a fabulous one in Spanish and would now like to find one in French. The Spanish one I have has pictures of different objects, like cars or airplanes or guns, and then details what every single part of the item is called.

  • For German-English I use www.leo.org and it is fabulous. It also has French-German and I think French-English options, but I can't speak to how good they are.

  • I use wordreference.com as well. If I can't find it there, or if I need help with a more technical term/phrase, I use proz.com (http://www.proz.com/?sp=ksearch)

anna, are you looking for a monolingual French dictionary? or bilingual? My favorite French monolingual dictionary is Le Petit Larousse Illustre. It's in color, images where needed, very complete. I haven't really found a good French English paper dictionary.

I use Leo for German-English and English German.  I know their French-German function is pretty good but the English-French one has some holes.

Either, this is a good lead. Thanks!
