I have been mostly lurking and posting some.
My Grandmother passed away last January. Since then my Uncle and I have been fixing and restoring her house since some of our family lived with her. The house was absolutely a mess. We pulled out three dumpsters full of trash. Literally trash. It was like a bad episode of hoarders.
About three years ago my husband and I purchased her a new stove. My uncle and I saved the best for last. The kitchen.
She has black appliances. So we got her the same stove we had since we like it.
I have the grates soaking in vinegar and water. I brushed all the caked on dried up food mess off. Then I sponge cleaned it. There is still so much caked on grime. I used a softish bristle brush but there are still some tough messes. I don't want to ruin the finish, the oven was never used. So if I can get the cook top clean with out ruining it, it can stay in the house when we sell it.
So I need ideas.
Thanks!

I have heard great things about Easy-Off. Looks like they make something specifically for the cook top, so I think that would definitely be worth a try. (link)
I've heard of using oven cleaner on the grates. Just coat them, put them in a plastic bag (outside!) wait an hour and then scrub them.
But if they are ruined, I bet you can buy new ones.
Wait.... you mean the rest of the cooktop, don't you? I would sprinkle it with baking soda and put a wet towel on top of it so it can "soak" and leave it that way for probably 24hr, adding more water if needed to keep it wet. Use a nylon scraper to pick at it.
