Re: where to stay in san francisco

  • What's your budget, how long are you here for, and what do you want to do?
  • thanks..  5 days.  no specific budget. some tourist/ shopping/ get a feel for the city if we were to ever get up and move there type trip! : )

  • Stay downtown, south of Market Street or Union Square.  From there you can catch public transportation or cabs to everything you want to see.

Remember that all distances on a map of SF are misleading.  The hills are steep and even going four blocks can be strenuous.

  • Oh...and remember that it will be very chilly.  The wind that comes off the bay is frigid.  There is a reason why people in SF wear leather jackets 350 days out of the year.
  • Priceline a 4* in the Union Square area. You'll probably get a good deal and it's a good location for accessing public transportation, shopping, and you can walk to Chinatown and the Ferry Terminal.

  • I like the waterfront area, we stayed at the Sheraton Fisherman's Wharf and really liked it.  We walked all along the Embarcadero, stopping at Pier 39 and then the Ferry Building, both are very touristy but with lots to see, do, shop and eat!  Plus it's close to catching the ferry to Alcatraz as well, which is a must do IMO.

  • I like the Westin St. Francis in Union Square, The Mark Hopkins Intercontinental, the Marriott in North Beach, and the Hyatt in the Embarcadero.

  • We stayed at Hotel Vitale across from the Ferry building. It was fantastic.
  • Priceline will often get you good deals.  Union Square East (not West), Embarcadero, and Fisherman's Wharf would be the top three areas, in that order.  I disagree with pp who suggested staying south of Market (aka SOMA).  Parts of SOMA get a little hairy and short of staying at the W, I wouldn't recommend it.

I'd rather be rock climbing or playing volleyball

Another vote for this (I grew up in the SF area).

  • The Westin St. Francis is right in the heart of Union Square. It's a stalwart of the hotel scene, but some of the rooms have gotten a bit dated. The Sir Francis Drake just up the street is nice as well.

If you're not price sensitive there's always the Mandarin, Mark Hopkins, Fairmont, etc.

I'd rather be rock climbing or playing volleyball
