Credit Unions??

My H is convinced that we need to go talk to our county credit union for our home mortgage. I'm having trouble finding any info online about this option. Anyone gone this route? Pros? Cons?

Re: Credit Unions??

  • We got our mortgage with TFCU.  We were really happy with them - 24 customer service and they were upfront about the entire process.  They were also running rate promotions this summer.  However, our friends went to a local credit union and were annoyed with them.  See if you can find people you know who have used the local credit union or if they have any reviews anywhere.

  • I researched tons of banks and our two credit unions.  Our credit unions were amazingly better options.  They play no games and give the best rate they can give, no haggling required.  Plus they were a lot friendlier, not salesy.
  • We own two homes and one is financed through a credit union.  I wouldn't say there are any huge pros or cons with either.  Ultimately, we wanted the best possible rate we could get and sometimes that can come through a credit union and sometimes not.  With our most recent mortgage, we went to them to see if they could match the rate we were quoted elsewhere--the rep we talked to told us they couldn't get close enough to "woo" us and that we should go with the great rate.  Liked his honesty!

  • We are coming to the end of a long process with our mortgage through the county teachers credit union that my father is part of. My parents had gotten loans from this credit union in the past so we went with it. Also, they offered us a state program loan with a low rate that worked for us. Closing is, fingers crossed, in two weeks, however, if we had to do it all over again, I don't think we would have used the credit union. Maybe it was just our guy or because it was the state program, but we just did not enjoy working with him. But you have to look at everything on the table and see what they can offer you as opposed to someone else. Also, ask around about that specific credit union and people they have worked with there.
