Anyone have a negative scanner?

We are trying to go through our negatives and our new scanner doesn't have that functionality.  (The first time I've lost a feature moving from PC to Mac :-(

I'm wondering if anyone has one that has worked well that they'd consider selling or renting to me.  It's one of those things I won't need once I'm done, so I don't want to buy a new one for $100+ dollars.

Or if anyone has sent negatives off to a service, how did that go?  I'm hesitant because we have lots of pics that aren't worth pay per picture for and it would be a waste to send everything in to be scanned.

Like any good super hero, I'm using my alter ego to protect my identity. Goodbye Silver poster status!

Re: Anyone have a negative scanner?

  • I have used scandigital.com twice in the past.  I have not sent negatives, they were all old pictures, some really old and they were able to do some restoration on the scanned version.  They were great and would recommend them to anyone looking to use their services.  I think they do negative work as well.  If you have some time for it all keep your eye on Groupon as they often run a deal, which is how we actually decided to try them. We felt that the deal was great and worth the money so that we didnt have to do it.  You send off your stuff, and they track it the whole way for you during the process and mail it back with the dvd.  They also set up an account on their site for you so you/relatives can have access to your pics that was as well.  I think the groupon was $40 or $50 for $100 worth of service.

Does Costco provide this service as well?  I can't recall off hand, but I think that they may have a similar service.  Or maybe thats video to dvd...?

  • I just went down to the basement and we do have one. That said, I got it with the best of intentions probably 10 years ago and then never figured out how to do it. It scans film strip-style negatives. I no longer have the HP scanner than went with it, just the part that holds and lights the negatives. (Though I do have an extra bed scanner that you are welcome to.) So, I don't know if it is much of an offer, but you are welcome to it.
