Malaysia - Publius and others

DH and I are going to Singapore for a week over Easter. A friend of ours is going to be there for a long-term work assignment, so we're going to visit him. We've heard that a few days is plenty of time to see Singapore, so we were looking into other places to go in the vicinity. Right now we're thinking about Kuala Lumpur and/or one of the beautiful-looking beaches (Tioman Island was recommended to us, but there seem to be others, like Redang and the Perhentian Islands, and probably a ton more we don't know about.) Is KL worth a trip? And if so, how many days should we allow? And any other Malaysian destinations you can recommend?

Re: Malaysia - Publius and others

  • Yeah KL is worth a visit.  If you're in the area, why not?

I'd give it at least 2 days.  We flew Singapore to KL (1-way), booked 3 months in advance and paid $84 (Singapore dollars, I believe it was) on Air Asia in 2010.  That's for 2 people and 2 checked bags!  So book advance for good deals!

Beaches might be tempting, if you're a beach person.  Personally I am not, and if I wanted to I could easily get that in Europe, KWIM?

Thanks! I'll check out Air Asia. We're not huge beach people, but sometimes we like a good beach vacation. I agree with being able to get it in Europe, but not in March/April! We were considering it because we thought it might be nice to get some beach relaxation after the long winter here in Scandinavia, which I'm sure you know well, haha.

Any tips for what to do in Singapore?

But this winter has been so short and painless...so far!

One very cool thing about KL: They've moved their dodgy street food vendors into mall food courts, so they're sanitary now.  But you still get the variety and authenticity.  We ate mostly at these until we got sick of Asian food entirely and headed straight for Burger King.

We didn't have much time in Singapore so we did the main tourist things: night safari, Singapore Flyer (like London Eye) and the nifty waterfront area.  Here's my blog about it:

    Day 1: http://www.2incrediblywhitepeopleinasia.blogspot.com/2010/07/day-24-singapore-day-1.html

    Day 2: http://www.2incrediblywhitepeopleinasia.blogspot.com/2010/07/day-25-singapore-day-2.html

KL is covered in other posts.

Thanks so much! You're right, this winter has been very mild and painless. But now you jinxed it!! I don't know if I can do another -30C winter like last year. I thought I was gonna freeze to death multiple times.

  • We went to KL about a year and a half ago in September and loved it. We also took a side trip to Kota Kinabalu (to climb Mt. Kinabalu) and also went to Tioman Islands. We stayed at a resort called Japamala and it was fantastic. You can read my blog about it here if you are still interested in a beach vacay. :)

  • We also went to Tioman about 6 years ago. It was beautiful. We wanted to stay at Japamala but it was fully booked! We ended up staying at the Berjaya resort, it was nice but it was huge! Our bungalow was more secluded, but I would try to stay at Japamala if you can get a room - it seems more intimate.

The resort had a lot of activities - golf, spa, night fishing, scuba, snorkeling and jungle donkey rides - so much fun!  Food was good and the staff were awesome.

In Singapore, we really liked the night safari, Chinatown, just wandering around the city and bar hopping at Clark Quay. We also went to the Raffles to have an authentic Singapore Sling - where the drink was invented. It was a cheesy experience, but fun.

We basically did this exactly. We did a private tour as well that was nice.

  • I've heard good things about Tioman and Perenthian, although I haven't been to either. . I'm in Penang right now. It's OK, but I'll definitely be checking out the other two place before coming back here (although George Town is really fun). If you end up going I KL let me know, we can meet up for drinks or something.
  • Thanks, everyone! great tips

Publius - I will definitely let you know if we end up going to KL! a GTG sounds fun :-)
