New! Relocating

Hello!

My husband and I will be moving to the Boston/Providence area in about August! We probably won't live in the city, but I thought some people here may live in the suburbs. We'll probably be looking to buy a house in one of the towns between Providence and Boston. If anyone has any tips for nice places to house-hunt in that area, I'd really appreciate it!  We love an area with a small-town feel, and, while we don't have kids yet, they're on the 3-to-5 year plan, so we definitely will be paying attention to schools. Thanks!

  • Welcome to the board!  What brings you guys to the area?  Where are you coming from, NY or Germany?

We're a relatively small board but we always welcome newbies and you should feel free to jump right in.

I don't know that neck of the woods very well, but probably LadyE and some of the other ladies here will be able to help.

I'd rather be rock climbing or playing volleyball

  • Welcome!  :). DH and I actually just bought our first house in Foxboro a few months ago.  We love it so far.  The surrounding towns are also really nice (Sharon, Mansfield, Wrentham, etc).  We have family a little further west out in Bellingham and Medway too, and those areas are really nice too.

    ...hello out there!

  • Hi and welcome!

We just moved here over the summer. We were in an apt in Norwood for a few months (really liked) and we bought a house in Stoughton last fall. We really like the small-ish town feel, but being close to a lot of things and having a lot of shopping/activity options.

  • DH got a job in Providence, and I'm just finishing up law school in NY. I'm going to be looking for jobs in both Providence and Boston, which is why we're interested in the area in between. We technically live in NY, but the hubby has a fellowship in Germany that has him spending a large portion of the year there, and I visit a bit. We've looked at Foxboro online, it looks nice! We actually drove up to the area yesterday and we got as far as North Attleboro, which is a bit more toward the Providence side. It was alright, but it didn't really have that small-town feel. We'll have to find a weekend with more time to get a little further toward Boston.
  • Commuting from N. Attleboro/Foxboro/etc. into Boston would be a huge PITA, just FYI.

DH commutes into Boston every day.  It's really not so bad.  He gets an express train to s. station in Mansfield (4ish miles from us), and it's probably 45-50 minutes door to door.  That's practically how long it took him to drive in when we were only 7 miles out.

  • I grew up in a small town right near the RI border, to the east of RI. I can recommend lots of small towns in that area if you're interested. Providence is about 15-20 minutes away, Boston is about 45 minutes, Newport is about a 1/2 hr. Growing up, my dad worked in Boston. Sometimes he would drive in, take a bus or the train. It couldn't have been that bad if he made the commute for that many years.
I now live near the Cape. I wouldn't want to commute to providence from here, but the drive to Boston isn't bad.
Let me know if you'd like more info on the small towns east of RI.

  • The area near Frankin may not be bad.  My friend takes the commuter rail in to Boston.  Even Worcester may not be too bad.

    Anyway, welcome to the board!

  • Welcome!

Foxboro is a great area with great schools. It is right on 95, which is what you would take to get in to Providence. H and I used to live in Foxboro before we were married and we loved it. When we were looking at houses, we considered Foxboro but there's not a lot of inventory if you're considering buying. They do have a lot of rentals, though.

There are also Walpole, Sharon and Norwood. Sharon and Walpole have excellent schools, but Norwood is very popular. It's one of those towns where everyone who lives there thinks there's no town better than Norwood, KWIM? Lots of townies and town pride, which is a little funny because it has more of an urban feel than Walpole, Sharon or Foxboro.

To get real small-town feeling, you can consider areas right outside those on the highway. There's Westwood, Medfield, Dover, Sherborn, Millis, Medway, Norfolk, Wrentham. These towns are farther from the highway and public transportation, but they've got more the small-town feel. The first 4 on the list are expensive towns to buy in with little to no option to rent, but the school systems are some of the best in the state.

Franklin has great schools, too. And it's more affordable to buy in Franklin (lower home prices and lower taxes) and there's a lot of inventory.
  • Hi Ladies.  I'm new on here but I wanted to check in since I'm relatively new to the area.  I moved to Mass from NJ in 11/10.  I was living with my inlaws in Attleboro initially and then we bought a house in Mansfield last Summer.  I commuted to Concord MA for a while and the commute was hellish.  I do know quite a few people who take the T into Boston who have better luck, so it's something to keep in mind.  Mansfield is a great town and it's pretty reasonable.  I enjoy being in between Providence and Boston so I am not too far from either.  My husband has family all over Mass so definitely let us know what towns you narrow down to.

     Good luck!
