What are you reading?

It's been a little while since we've done this post.  So...

What was the last book that you finished?  How was it?

What are you reading now?  How is it so far?

Re: What are you reading?

  • What was the last book that you finished?  How was it?

A collection of short stories -- David Golder, The Ball, Snow in Autumn, The Courilof Affair -- by Irene Nemirovsky.  It was quite good.  She's the same author who wrote Suite Francais which I really enjoyed.   I like her writing style -- there isn't much action in her stories, but she really dives down deep into her characters.  Those character-focused stories are really interesting to me when done right.

What are you reading now?  How is it so far?

I'm reading Liquid Jade, by Beatrice Hohenneger.  It's a book about the history of tea.  One of my Goodreads friends raved about it, so I thought I'd give it a shot.  So far, it's just okay.  The chapters are short and relatively self-contained, which makes it easy to read.  But it's heavy on people, places, and dates which makes it a little more textbook-y that I was hoping.  Hopefully it gets better.

  • Last Book: Sarah's Key. I was shocked at how well I enjoyed this. a wee little bit a crying from this one.

Currently up are 2:  The Great Gatsby: Taking me a little more time to get into this than I had hoped.

Private #1: This is the second book in the series from James Pattersone. I'm like 16 pages in. It just came out this month and I usually can get through his books in a flash.

  • I don't get much reading time in anymore :(

What was the last book that you finished?  How was it?

The Unbecoming or Mara Dryer by Michelle Hodkin

It is a debut novel from a former nestie.  I loved it!!  It is a young adult paranormal novel/thriller.  Just the right amount of spookiness, sassiness, and young love.  :)

What are you reading now?  How is it so far?

Nurture Shock by Po Bronson and Ashley Merryman

It is a nonfiction book about children and parenting.  So far it has been very interesting read.  It makes you think twice about a lot of the conventional parenting.  I found the chapter on the inverse power of praise the most interesting so far.

  • Great timing for this post!  I have 4 weeks in between classes coming up.  Planning on doing some reading that has nothing to do with school.
Willa 4.6.06 and Henry 10.18.08 Camp Sinki
  • The last book that I read was the newest one by Jodi Picoult. I cant remember the name of it but it was a very interesting read. Made you think about certain beliefs and morals.

The book I am currently reading is The Hunger Games. This has been recommended to me by many people so I have decided to read the trilogy. After that is another easy reading book and the The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

  • I don't know the last thing I finished.

I'm constantly reading pieces and parts of magazines, cookbooks, and running books.

The latest novel I started is Room; I have yet to get back into it.

  • The last book I finished was The Buddha in the Attic.  I liked it.  It is a short book written in the collective from the perspective of Japanese picture brides who moved to California in the 1900's.  Interesting topic, interesting writing style and fast to finish.  I would recommend it.  The story does not get deeply into any one character's story so I didn't feel any huge sense of connection to any of the characters, but I did enjoy it.

What I'm reading now?  Hmm, Casebooks on Contracts, Property, Constitutional Law and The Regulatory State.  LOL.  They are interesting, but not recommended for light reading. Stick out tongue

How far did you get with Room? I put it down for a few days toward the start of the book. It was difficult to read in the voice of the 5 year old narrator and there was one part that was hard for me to stomach. I went back to it and ended up really enjoying it.

  • DUDES.  I read 2 books over vacation.  2 BOOKS PEOPLE.  Where the F is my parade?

But seriously, I read The Help and The Green Mile.  I enjoyed both.  Neither were hard to read, both kept my interest (especially the last half of The Green Mile) and both offered some good food for thought.

So, I've officially met my yearly quota of books to read.  See you all in 2013.

JK, I always love reading books I just never can form the habit unless I'm on vacation.

  • The Sweet Life in Paris' by David Lebovitz. It was for the Slow Food Book club and I ended up not going. Did like the book though.

Lately I've been reading HerbMentor.com and researching in cookbooks.

  • For Juli:

I really enjoyed The Green Mile.  Congrats on finishing two books over vacation!

I don't want to post any spoilers in case others haven't read...

But I passed what I thought to be the MOST gripping part (rug, truck, and all that) and it got easier to handle. I stopped due to general busy-ness of life, not b/c it was too difficult at that point. I really do want to finish it, but having time to devote my concentration to it is lacking.

  • My last book was Dragonfly in Amber by Diana Gabaldon, which is the second in the Outlander series.  I wasn't super impressed by it like I was Outlander.

I just started the first book of the Hunger Games.  I just know I'm going to fly through them...so good!

  • The last book I read was the Hunger Games series by Suzanne Collins.  It came highly recommended and I really enjoyed them.  Well, the first 2 in the series anyway.  The 3rd just dragged and the ending was pretty terrible IMO :P

I'm not currently reading anything, I haven't made it to the library in a while.

  • What was the last book that you finished?  How was it?

I read Very Bad Men last week. In two days. I loved it. It's the second book in a newer series by a new author. The books are set in Ann Arbor. I chose the first one because a) it was free through the library on my Kindle with no waiting list and b) it was set in MI. I ended up loving it.

What are you reading now?  How is it so far?

Stupid book for my stupid Master's class. It's not interesting. I hate taking classes after I've worked all day. I started The Paris Wife, but I haven't had time to read it and my library loan on my Kindle expired. *pout*
