Fellow readers...

What are you reading now? I need some ideas.

I'm almost finished reading a historical fiction book similar to Downton Abbey since I've finished the series. (insert a wahhh I have to wait for more of that show here.)

Re: Fellow readers...

  • Right now I'm reading Tender at the Bone, a memoir by food critic Ruth Reichl (it's our book club pick this month). I'm only about 75 pages in, so I can't really give a recommendation on it yet.

I'm also reading The Piano Teacher by Janice Lee, which is historical fiction set in WWII-era Hong Kong.  It's pretty interesting so far, and was a good follow-up for me b/c I just got done with a pair of books set in pre- and post-war China (Shanghai Girls and Dreams of Joy by Lisa See.  Also very interesting.).

  • I'm reading Walk the Red Road, the sequel to Beyond the Western Sun.  Excellent series - there will be a third book next year.  I also just started Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close.  No opinion yet.

Recently I finished The Art of Racing in the Rain.  I highly recommend it, especially to anyone who has ever loved a dog.

  • I'm finishing up Before the End, After the Beginning by Dagoberto Gilb. It's a collection of 10 short stories that takes place mostly in the Southwest and deal with the American experience. Very powerful.

A recent great read that I did for the review website was Queen of America by Luis Alberto Urrea. It's a sequel to The Hummingbird's Daughter, which I actually haven't read; you don't really need to. Queen of America is about the author's great-aunt who was considered a saint in Mexico and was exiled to the States at the turn of the century after inspiring a revolt. It's hilarious and touching and sad. I loved it. My mom's reading The Hummingbird's Daughter right now and is loving it.

If you want a quick, lighthearted but smart nonfiction read, try The Shakespeare Thefts by Eric Rasmussen. He and his team trace First Folios all over the world--the book tells the crazy stories behind the Folios' travels through the centuries.

  • I'm loving Downton right now (I plan on watching the last episode tonight!). What book were you reading?

If you want something creepy from the same time period, I recommend Sarah Water's The Little Stranger. Soooo creepy and very, very good.

But, right now, I'm reading Elizabeth Hay's Alone in the Classroom (it's a novel), a shlocky urban fantasy seies (Rob Thurman) and next in my pile is David Mitchell's The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet. I quite like David Mitchell - if you haven't read his novel Cloud Atlas, try that one first. It unfolds in a really interesting way (especially once you reach the turning point in the middle of the book).

  • Right now, I'm reading A Discovery of Witches and really enjoying it.  I might have stayed up reading in bed for two hours last night.

After that, I have American Gods by Neil Gaiman in the cue.

  • I'm currently reading Atlas Shrugged.  I fell like I've been reading it forever and I'm still only 2/3 of the way through!  It's been so long since I've looking at my to-read list, so I can't remember what is up next - I'll need something light and quick I think.

I've heard other good reviews of the Lisa See books as well.

  • I just finished Deja Dead by Kathy Reichts. It was hard to put down. I'm still trying to start The Concrete Blonde by Michael Connelly. Every time I pick the book up all hell breaks loose in my house. I'm on attempt number 4 now and will probably start it tonight.
  • I've been reading so much YA crap lately. I just finished Hollowland and Hollowman by Amanda Hocking - they were action packed, so they kept me intrigued, but they were a little out there.

right now I'm reading The Red Tent by Anita Diamant. I just started it, so I'm still reading lots of background story at the moment... can't wait for it to pick up.

I also have Little Bee on my currently-reading list, but I haven't picked it up in a while. I wasn't hooked from the beginning, so I put it down to read some others. hoping I can get interested in it after The Red Tent.

  • Kaesha, I was reading some YA books that were 2.99 on my kindle called Polly's Story, Grace's story and Isabel's story. I didn't realize they were YA when I bought them but they were interesting but to short. At only 158 pages each I read them each in a day.

I went on good reads in search of something that had good reviews and over 500+pages and ended up with Ken Follet's Fall of Giants. An epic WWI novel that has multiple characters and crossing stories. It's good so far.

I've added all the book selections you guys have given me to my kindle wishlist. :)
