Good Monday Morning!

And happy Chinese New Year to all those celebrating!

I'm dragging this morning. It's freezing outside and my bus was 25 minutes late. I'm thinking another round of coffee is in order stat.

Have a great day ladies!

Re: Good Monday Morning!

  • I managed to get in early this morning! W and I have date night tonight at the silent movies, which is why I needed to get in early. But today there is a lot of stuff to do, I am not looking forward to it at all!

1st year anniversary in Victoria with a killer whale topiary!
  • Happy Chinese New Year! We're also celebrating a birthday from last week so I brought a cake. My Chinese colleague usually brings treats, too.

Weird being back at work. I was looking forward to it but I am pretty grumpy this morning. I have to reschedule everything from last week which is a bit of a pain.

It was super icy this morning, which made driving interesting. Luckily I took the trash out this morning so I knew it was icy and didn't drive too fast. My Mini Cooper doesn't do as well in the icy as DH's Subaru.

    Have a good day ladies.

  • Morning!!!

So I left with plenty of time this morning.. it took me longer to get here this morning than it did in the snow.. wtf. Apparently people are going back to work!

Happy Chinese New Year!!! I don't know what it is to celebrate, Jennlin should enlighten me.. because I'd really like to participate. If it includes money and food, I'm in. :)

Busy, busy day at work, hope everyone has a great day!

  • Good Morning! Tman is back at school today. His school had a long winter break, so this is his first day back since December 23rd! I got use to having him home, and am a little sad that I'm all alone today. But, getting back into a regular routine will be nice as well.

    That's exactly what it is.

Within China, regional customs and traditions concerning the celebration of the Chinese new year vary widely. People will pour out their money to buy presents, decoration, material, food, and clothing. It is also the tradition that every family thoroughly cleans the house to sweep away any ill-fortune in hopes to make way for good incoming luck. Windows and doors will be decorated with red colour paper-cuts and couplets with popular themes of "good fortune" or "happiness", "wealth", and "longevity". On the Eve of Chinese New Year, supper is a feast with families. Food will include such items as pigs, ducks, chicken and sweet delicacies. The family will end the night with firecrackers. Early the next morning, children will greet their parents by wishing them a healthy and happy new year, and receive money in red paper envelopes. The Chinese New Year tradition is to reconcile, forget all grudges and sincerely wish peace and happiness for everyone.

    Vietnamese people do it too.

Awesome refresher.  I'm sure that I was taught this at some point in time during elementary / middle school years, but I've not had close friends who celebrate it so I've forgotten.  Sounds like fun - I think I mainly would be excited about all the delicious food!

  • Happy Monday!

The weather in San Francisco right now is cold, windy, and rainy, so I'm not sure what I'll do to keep myself busy today.  I have my first session with my new trainer at 11:00 AM (hoping this guy sticks, as this is my third trainer since August), and then I need to come up with a dinner plan and go to the grocery store.  I also have to go by the UPS pick-up place here to get some packages that I missed on Friday.  Then I might vacuum and do some laundry - I swear it is amazing how much laundry two people can produce.  I feel like it never ends!

(I'm also toying with buying the first book in the Hunger Games series on my Kindle but fear that will make me completely unproductive for the rest of the week...)

Hope you all have a lovely day.

  • good morning! i'm nesting from my phone, in bed right now. jealous? :)

i kinda hate that i'm *still* sick and not really getting much better just yet, but that didn't stop us from feasting last night. (yes, sara, lotsa food!). one of the "purposes" of having a big feast on nye is to eat leftovers on new years day. it represents "always having plenty to eat" for throughout the rest of the year.

there's certain minor traditions that i follow on new years day--

no working -"regular" work, but also no cooking, cleaning, etc..(it represents having a relaxed, no stress-year)

no hair washing - (represents washing away luck)

not using anything sharp - (represents cutting into your fortune)

no taking out the garbage (represents throwing away luck)

no fighting/arguing/grudges (because those will last all year)

pay off all debts prior to cny (if you owe money, you'll always owe money)

have a clean house pre-nye (clean house is prestine for all year)

there's lots lots more, but that's all i can think of off the top of my head at the moment! oh! wear red! because red is lucky!

also, for the year of the dragon--there's also lots of pressure to have a "dragon baby" so my whole family for weeks has told me i can't have the baby early...so now i have less stress, yay! i have a dragon baby! (dragon babies are good luck, and generally successful. if i have a dragon-son, super crazy traditional and superstitious people have been known to pay dragon-boys to roll around in their bed for good luck).

just wanted to add hope everyone has a great day and a happy chinese new year! at the very least, try and eat an orange, because oranges represent plentiful-gold-fortune. :)

That's fabulous.  Also so interesting to hear all of the traditions you follow and the "why" behind them.  When I was getting married I kept wondering what the significance was of all the weird traditions (cake cutting, first dance, etc.), but of course never had time to look them up.  Maybe I'll do that now...

  • Good morning!

It's been a hectic weekend, that's for sure. We had to go up to my ILs house in Bham because we were without power, and we didn't want to make M be cold or drink cold formula. Plus, we couldn't flush our toilet or put anything down the drains because Sammamish Water and Sewage was without power.

That being said, we got home yesterday (even though our power was back on at midnight Thursday night), because we figured we were already up there, might as well stay. :)

Hope everyone has a great week!

Also, be careful out there! It's SO icy!

  • Good morning, everyone, and happy CNY!! <3

And, YAY dragon baby, Jennlin! :D I've read that this year is water, too, which is supposed to make the babies calmer, more directed, and less impatient, which sounds pretty good to me!

Nothing too exciting today; workin' on the nursery. :) And a visit to my mom planned, too.
