School me on smartphones please
We have Verizon and I am thinking about getting DH a smartphone for his bday in March. When I look at the options, I get completely overwhelmed. I don't want to spend more than $100 on the phone (that includes our upgrade). I have no idea what phone to pick or how much of a data plan we would need. I will ask when I go in, but I am afraid they will try to get me to spend more than I need. Any suggestions/advice?
Re: School me on smartphones please
The first question is iphone or droid? Do you know which you H likes? How tech savy is he? Do you have MAC or PC?
I would generally say go for the iphone. I think most people would like that. Other than that its hard to say which Droid to go for -so far in advance because with new phones coming out, pricing on older phones will likely drop.
I personally have a Droid and love it but its not compatabile with my MAC so that might be an issue. I have the HTC Rezound and love it. I can't remember exactly which HTC H has, but he loves it ( it was the first one with 4G). I've discovered that I really prefer the HTC/Nexus Droids to the Samsung and Motorola.
I'm not much help on the data plan because I was grandfathered in with mine. I know there have been changes for new customers and data plans ( not sure if you could be considered grandfathered in as well) so maybe some else can help you with that issue.
If he uses and loves Google products (gmail, etc) then the Droid nice b/c everything syncs so well. "Droid" is just a nickname for "Android" which is an open source platform on which lots of companies make phones. I think the only one out with the newest release of Android is the Galaxy Nexus, which I have, but it's spendy. If you want to go with an older one, try to get one with the next oldest build. Make sense?
2GB is the standard VZW data offering. They recently had a promotion to 'double your data' for the same price. That's what I got for DH. I think he said he used something teeny like 15MB in the first month! Unless you think DH will be on it all.the.time, and never using wireless, and doing crazy downloads - - then 2GB is probably OK for him.

16 read! my read shelf:
I have and love my iPhone.
We were also grandfathered in to the unlimited data plan with Verizon, so I've never paid attention to how much data we consume with our normal usage--so I'm sorry, but no advice there!
Good luck deciding. It will change your life.

I don't have a smartphone, so I'm getting schooled too?
If I get a smartphone but choose not to get data, can I utilize free wifi at places or do I need data to do that?

Technically, I believe the answer is yes. HOWEVER, most sellers require a 2 year agreement to get the 'cheaper' price of the phone. I imagine if you paid full price (or bought one used, etc) you might get around that?
Yes. One of my friends does that. You can also install some programs that will allow you to surf the web without paying for a data plan.
BUT to get some of the special pricing on phones, you may be required to purchase a data plan for a period of time ( say 6 months), but once that time period is over you can drop it and use other methods.
DH and I both have iPhones with an unlimited data plan and LOVE it. I did have a Blackberry before upgrading to an iPhone and I loved that too.
