Tax help please!

Hi ladies. DH is currently stationed overseas and I'm in the states. He told me to go ahead and get our taxes done because he is busy and won't be able to get to it for a while. Sooo... I have a few questions.

I'm going to be going to H&R Block to get them done. Is that the easiest way? Or would I save a lot of trouble doing it online?

I do not have a power of attorney... do I need one? Or do I just send him the papers to sign and then turn in?

Are w-2's mailed out or does he need to email he his?

Thanks in advance girls. This is the first year we've filed together so I have no idea what I'm doing.

Re: Tax help please!

  • Don't go to out in town H&R Block. Those are not accountants. Do online.

http://turbotax.intuit.com/taxfreedom/ (I'd only use TT if you're in one of the free states, and I'd compare your refunds [if you get one] with both HRB/TT).

His W-2 should be available on Mypay, or it was mailed, depending on how he elected to receive it.

He doesn't have to sign anything if you do it online.

I've seen a lot of military surprise homecomings. It wouldn't work on me. I always have my back to the corner and my face to the door. Looking for terrorists, criminals, various other threats, and husbands.
  • You ladies just made my life so much easier. Thank you so much. One less thing to stress about.

That depends on the state, if you're filing a state return.  I know for sure we had to print out Joe's Wisconsin return and both of us had to sign it since we filed joint.

Did you file MFS for state and MFJ for federal since you had different residencies? I haven't done my state return yet, but I expect hijinks for filing MFS, since CA is a community property state. If I have to have H sign anything, I'll obtain his permission and sign it for him.

Correct.  We get to do three states this year. Party!!!  I keep wavering back and forth between doing it myself and letting my coworker do it for me.

Oh dude. Let the co-worker do it. lol

I hate state returns so much. I can't wait to move back to Vegas for that very reason.

Are you guys not both residents of Nevada?

Amen. I actually tried to get a seasonal job there for some extra cash and they wouldn't even consider me because I had a degree in accounting. You'd think they would jump all over it since they wouldn't have to train me.

The people they hire know nothing about taxes or tax code- they know how to run H&R Block's program. You get the exact same thing online. And it doesn't cost $100.

If your taxes are complicated enough that you can't do them, find a real accountant to do them.

    We are.

But since the MC can't seem to fix his residence on his pay, we are STILL paying CA taxes every month. So we have to file the return for CA, but get it all back. It's just a PITA.

    WHAT?! That's ridiculous.

  • Please use the FREE tax center on post or taxslayer. I did taxslayer for the first time this year and wish I had done it sooner.  They are just as easy to use as turbotax (that I had used for the past 4 years) but it is COMPLETELY FREE for all military. I filed my federal AND state returns for free and could not be happier. It just kills me to have to pay for the government to give me back the money they took. Its an interest free loan they're getting from me. Grrr.

Then adjust your withholdings so it's not.

Gosh Stan, quit acting like it's so easy. You know the gov't forces us all to let them borrow our money every year.

BTW: Info for everyone. 1040ez tax returns are free. Itemized ones are not and depending on your tax situation, itemizing might be worth while. We've filed one 1040ez ever and it was the smallest refund we ever saw. Itemized all the way!

I had to give my coworkers very explicit directions about the withholdings calculator. :(

    LMGTFY for real.
