ETTM: The name D-!-c-k

I get that it's mostly older men who still go by D-!-c-k, but why? Why on Earth would you still go by that name?

I work with someone who's legal name is Richard and he goes by the above name.

I just had to stop myself from saying "D-!-c-k is in..."

Re: ETTM: The name D-!-c-k

  • I have no idea. I know 5 older men that go by that name when their real name is Richard.

I've always wanted to ask them what made them choose D!ck over Rich, Richy, etc..

  • Honest to God, our wedding DJ's name was Richard Beaver.  He goes by Austin (for obvious reasons) and he was *amazing* and is a super cool guy, but when I wrote out the check for him, I had to write it to Richard A. Beaver and I turned to my husband and was like, "Wow.  Don't ever let me accidentally do that to our children."  So we're going to Urban Dictionary any names we come up with to make sure they're not some horrible slang thing that we don't know about because we are not cool / hip / etc.

That might be one of the best names I've ever heard.

  • Thank you! I don't understand it either! Maybe they are stubborn?...

  • i asked someone once-- he said it's cause that's what his parents called him (his parents must've hated him haha). but really, diiiick is slang, right? my guess is that it wasn't what it means today back then.

my same question, though, applies to bob, short for robert, and bill short for william. shouldn't it at least start with the same letter?

  • I think in the same way that older people think "suck" is a real swear word instead of something like "Darn", they just don't think that the nickname for Richard is a bad word.

  • the owner of my company may or may not have that name. this morning i told this little guy (3yrs old) to say good morning d!ck. after he said it, i felt guilty... even though it's his name.

  • My dad's name is Richard and he has always preferred to go by Diick.  He's almost 72 years old.  He's used the nickname since he was a little boy.

According to this site, the nickname has been around since as early as 1220.  The word wasn't used as slang for pen!s until 1890.

that's interesting, because the people we all know and go by this name were all born after the 1890's (at least i'm pretty sure they are!).
