Flying with an infant

It looks like we are travelling to DC for Easter.  This will be our first flight with Cate. I have a couple of questions.  She will still be in her infant carrier at that point.  While we aren't buying a seat for her we are bringing her carseat.  As well as her stroller.  Can we bring those 2 things through security and check them at the gate?  Somebody told me that they were only allowed to bring a cheap umbrella stroller, I would rather take our normal stroller.  Also, we likely will have a straight through flight.  So time wise I would be able to check my pump and be okay but then there is the fear that they would lose it.  For convenience I would love to check it...what would you do?  Can I take bottles of milk through security?

Re: Flying with an infant

  • We flew to DC when DS1 was 6 months old.  We gate checked his infant seat.  We did not take a stroller, just the Ergo.  You are allowed to gate check the infant seat and stroller though, from what I read.  Plus the diaper bag doesn't count as your personal bag.  You can take bottles through security.  We checked our adult bag-DH and my clothes, and carried on Will's clothes.  Figured in case they lost stuff, it'd be easier/cheaper to replace ours, instead of a wardrobe for a person who outgrows clothes in a few months.  Maybe see if you can fit your pump and most of Cate's stuff in your carry on?

  • Yes you can gate check the car seat and stroller.  I have gate checked the travel system without any problems.  You can take bottles and milk through security.  They will just ask that you have it out so they can test the liquid. . They just hold a strip over it for a few seconds and it doesn't leave your sight.  I'm not very trustworthy of airlines in regards to things getting where they need to be and in the condition you want it, so I would put the pump in a carry on or use it as a carry on if you can.
