Personal documents

How long do you hold on to bills? Receipts? Etc? I have a ton of documents and I think I can start shredding some of them but I'm not sure how far back I should keep things. Also, any documents you never get rid of? I don't plan to get rid of tax documents, house documents, or medical documents but is there anything else I should keep?

Re: Personal documents

  • Im the worst and rarely keep receipts, unless it is something with some sort of warranty. I used to staple the receipt to the manual and put it all in a box. As for taxes, i shred them after 7 years (its really not necessary to keep them after that). I do keep all my school records, house records, marriage and divorce documents (thank you, new drivers license requirements), and health documents. Oh, I also keep my quarterly retirement statements, so I can go back through, monitor growth, etc.
  • IDK, I'm a horrible record keeper. My contribution though is we do have a scanner and keep a lot of stuff electronically. That's way easier to stay organized for me.
  • We keep all reciepts since we need to have them for backup for our taxes in case we are ever audited we can show them the proof.  Same thing with the busienss we keep every reciept and copy of the bill we pay for through the company as backup documentation.

I guess my answer wasn't really that helpful. Smile

  • I save tax returns and the related documents for 7 years (per IRS)

I saved DH's car payment documents/bills until it was paid off and I had the title, then shredded. Will do the same with my new car. All other bills are on eBill and drafted, including bank statements.

Check stubs I save for a year until I get my W-2, check the info, then shred.

Mortgage stuff I keep in my "tax" file, same for student loans, IRA, 401k, etc. And then my dad tells me what I don't need and I shred it after I file my taxes and get my refund.

  • I'm glad I am not the only one who holds on to documents.  DH tried to purchase a $400 scanner yesterday so we can scan and then shred documents.  He said there was too much paperwork in our house.  I'm like "Hello, you work in an office with DOCUMENT MANAGEMENT SOFTWARE, do you really need to spend $400 of our own money on something to keep at our house when you can just scan all this stuff at work?"  He was not pleased at me putting my foot down but I am pregnant and hormonal so he doesn't want to mess with me and deal with my wrath.

To answer your actual question, I would keep current policies (homeowners, auto, etc.), any contracts (A/C maintenance, TV extended warranty, etc), or any bills you may have had a dispute about and might need to prove payment at a later date.

  • Thanks for the input. The responses are in line with what I was thinking. I just scored two file cabinets for $30 on craigslist so I'm going to start sorting through all of the stuff after work tomorrow.

  • As soon as it clears my bank account the receipt goes in the trash.  I have the past 5 years tax returns/all things tax related.  I dunno if that's good or not.
