Recs for casual (cheaper) drinks/dining in Old Town Alexandria
This is a tough one, mainly because I haven't lived in Old Town for many years and so I can't think of any place for "on the cheap side of things" type snacking/dining.
We want to meet our two friends for drinks/apps - or perhaps dinner - on Saturday night. (Red flag already, because I know Old Town places can get packed on Saturdays. Maybe we'll aim for the early side of the evening). We want to catch up with them and hear about their trip to Italy.
The only thing that springs to mind is Chadwicks or maybe Union Street (crowds, noise, ugh).
Recommendations anyone? This is what my one friend said he wanted:
I like Hole-in-the-Wall places, but I don?t know anything specific?someplace where drinks don?t cost $12 each!
Any suggestions in Old Town? We could meet, have drinks and dinner?take our time and not worry about being rushed out the door?

Old Town is fine by me as well. Any old favorites you?ve not been to in awhile? I remember that Greek place, for example?
Truthfully? I'd go to Joe Theismann's. The food is good, you can get a relatively quiet high sided booth, and the prices are reasonable.
Red Rocks is fun too, it is just crazy busy, and I'm not a fan of their wine selection and have a distaste for $10+ martinis.
I like the Light Horse too, but that's more of a going out than a catching up place IMO because it is LOUD. All the time. If it isn't the music it is happy hour or going out crowds.
Stand up for something you believe in.
That was going to be my suggestion. Plus there is always more street parking at the top of Old Town. If you don't mind a local chain, Austin Grill is reasonably priced as well. Another chain, at Eisenhower Ave, Ted's Montana is reasonably priced.
If you are interested in venturing out of Old Town, Rustico on Slaters Lane is quite good. And if you are beer people, they have an extensive draft menu.
To avoid crowds and high prices, just go to one of the many places that aren't "hot." King Street Blues, Joe Theisman's, Southside. Or if you really want hole in the wall, there's Rock It Grill.
Ah, Rock It Grill - I used to live right behind (and diagonally from) that place - many many late night memories!
