Aruba or Costa Rica?

any opinions of one over the other? Thanks for any thoughts!

Re: Aruba or Costa Rica?

  • been to both. costa rica hands down.
Friday, December 28 2012. The day I had emergency appendix surgery in Mexico and quit smoking. Proof that everything has a good side!! DH and I are happily child-free!! No due date or toddler tickers here!! my read shelf:
Alison's book recommendations, favorite quotes, book clubs, book trivia, book lists (read shelf)
  • Costa Rica for me...I hope to plan a trip there next year!

This x100.  There's so much more to do in Costa Rica, the landscape is so much more diverse, the animal life there is incredible... it's one of me and DH's most favorite vacation destinations.

  • I've never been to Aruba so I can't compare, but I loved Costa Rica.  It's beautiful with wildlife, rainforest, waterfalls, beaches, and volcanoes.  It's also reasonably priced and has many fun activities/excursions like hanging bridges, ziplining, white water rafting, hot springs, etc.

  • You're welcome!  We went on our honeymoon in 2010 and had a blast.

You may want to do some research and figure out which areas you're interested in since the climates, land, and weather will be different.

We split the trip up and went to Manuel Antonio (beaches, rainforest, wildlife everywhere) and then Arenal (active volcano, hot springs, lots of activities).  We went at the start of the rainy or "green" season in late June/early July and it was wonderful.  Everything was lush and green, in rained some in the evenings, but the mornings were sunny and hot.

The months you mentioned -- March through May -- are part of their summer/dry season.  That said, CR weather, especially in the rainforest, can always be unpredictable.  It's still likely to rain often, but that's part of the fun and beauty of it.  :)

If you need any recs or have specific questions then just let me know.  We had a great time, and if you decide on CR then definitely do Sky Trek ziplining!

  • H and I loved our trip to Costa Rica.  Like pps, we also split up our trip - the cloud forest, then Arenal, then the Osa Peninsula and then Uvita.  There was quite a bit of packing and unpacking involved, as I'm sure you can imagine, but it was definitely worth it.  We did volcanic mud massages, guided hiking, ziplining, whitewater rafting, visited the hot springs, hung out by the pool.

I like this site for a real bare bones look at the layout of the country and what each area has to offer -  http://costaricaexperts.com/destinations.php.  I don't necessarily think you should book with them though - they're pretty overpriced, IMO.

Two hotels we love, love, loved were El Silencio Lodge & Spa and Lapa Rios.  Both were excellent.  I wasn't a fan of Arenal Nayara or Oxygen Jungle Villas and wouldn't recommend either.

  • We have gone to Aruba twice and we just went to Costa Rica in December. Like the others said if your looking for an adventure/excursion type vacation Costa Rica is the place for you. We went horseback riding, ATV tour to Ziplining, snorkeling etc. It was very cool and Costa Rica is a beautiful country.

Aruba is beautiful, has great weather and dining options but I think its more of a vegging out, laying by the pool type vacation.
