What do you think? (side business)

Ok, so I have severely neglected my food blog, but I still have a huge passion for cooking and baking. I'm considering starting a new "business" where I would come to someone's home and give them a 1 on 1 cooking class. This would most likely occur on the weekends and I am pretty sure at least a few of my sisters' friends might be interested in something like this.

Another idea would be to show someone how to plan meals for a week and take them to the store to show them how to shop & buy directly from the list. I know that a lot of people struggle with meal planning and that can be the reason why they give up by the middle of the week and eat out all the time.

Would you be willing to have someone come to your home and teach you to cook a meal? If so, how much would you be willing to pay for this kind of a service? (Keep in mind that I have not attended culinary school, I am just a hobby-foodie)  What about someone teaching you how to meal plan/grocery shop?

Re: What do you think? (side business)

  • One drawback that I can think of is that with a business like this you will have to build a good name for yourself or you won't have any business. You might have to start out giving out free lessons, you would have to be really smart about marketing yourself and depending on the size of city you live in you might have a hard time getting started. I am not saying that it's impossible, these are just things that I would keep in mind if I were in your shoes.

That's a good point.  We have some of those kitchens where you come in and cook for a week and I'll tell you this- the clientele are mostly upper class.

You might could use your blog to gain popularity and branch out.  Offer a contest or something when you get lots of local followers.

  • I think that as an end goal, this sounds like a great idea. Have you thought about maybe starting in community ed and figuring out a way to show the basics of meal planning and possibly even showing/cooking a couple recipes with the use of either a hot plate or if it's @ a HS, using their Home Ec (or whatever they call it these days) room?

That way, you can get your name out there and as an "after course" offer the in home sessions.  I know around here, they are dying to get new community ed classes/teachers.

  • Kim I think it would be great to build a portfolio for yourself by getting friends to let you help them cook fancy meals and have Hanz take pictures. I agree about having a blog to gain followers as well. I also think it might be great to start out by doing a group lesson instead of private lessons. I would showcase tons and tons of recipes you've made on your blog to showcase your talent.

..... if you need my assistance with anything web related you know I'm here for ya ;)

  • All very great points and thoughts! Thank you! I literally thought of the idea maybe an hour ago, so it needs some real work, but your thoughts are really helpful!

Joy - You are the first person on my list if/when I get a blog going! :)

  • awesome! ;) I love a good blog. I'm excited for you, I love the idea.
  • I think this is a really good idea! I have friends that are doctors and lawyers working insane hours and they are always way too busy to grocery shop and cook let alone meal plan. I love to cook so I talk about it all the time and they are always asking me for recipes and meal ideas and saying "how do you do that?!". I think people like that would be a good market. I dont know what kind of cooking you do, but if it's the quick and easy kind while still being healthy and delicious I think people will be into it. As the others said you'll have to start small and build your way up. It would be good to write a business plan of sorts and start developing your blog for now and then in a few months start to expand on the ideas in your business plan. Sounds like a lot of fun!
  • I think it's a good idea. I would find what that normally costs in your area, and then charge less than that. You will need to get good word of mouth, but if you start with friends and get them to write reviews on a website, I think you would be golden!

  • My city runs something similar as an adult learning class.  They pick a "type of cuisine" and the class meets at a local independant grocer to learn how to shop for that type of food.  Then everyone goes back to a central location to cook several recipes and enjoy the communal meal that everyone has participated in.  They are highly subscribed programs.  I did the learn how to cook thai.

If there was anything I could suggest though, if you go with a communal type lesson teach specifics during the cooking, like how to chop or what it means to saute (just examples).  I didn't take another class because it seemed like a pay me $40 for my recipes instead of learning techniques.

I like the idea, I think you could totally make it fly :)
