I'm writing my first ever cover letter

Good lord I'm a bit lost.

Think tonight might be a "shot before bed" kind of night. DH is grumpy, too.

Re: I'm writing my first ever cover letter

  • Yeah, I think cover letters are kind of stab-yourself-in-the-face-with-a-fork inducing myself.

If it would make you feel better about it, I'm happy to proof it. Sometimes a second set of eyes makes everything okay, and sometimes it's better to pass it on unseen. :)

  • Bwah. I threw in the towel, made it ambitious (but just one page) and figure it won't work. There's no way they're going to consider me.I sent it in an hour ago and got a response that the search committee will begin evaluating candidates in February so I can forget about this for awhile.

Oh well, at least I can say I applied for something in the States!  This was the wrong day to be doing this since I received a note which sure makes me think I'm getting renewed for next year.

Thank you, however, for the offer of proofing!!!

  • My DH used to spend hours on a cover letter when he was unemployed. I kept telling him that while he shouldn't make any glaring errors or use curse words, HR people rarely actually read them. I spent several months at an internship where my job was to pre-sort applications, and I almost never took the time to read the cover letter. My dad, who sometimes does recruiting for a worldwide firm has said the same. Now DH is an HR director and told me that he also hardly ever reads them.

In other words - make it good but don't spend a week on it making it Pulitzer-worthy.

And amen to the shot before bed. I had a glass and a half of red last night and might have made it more but the bottle was empty.

  • Thank you guys so much for your help. I have one more question - I got an acknowledgement of receipt. Should I send a "Thank you for your consideration, I look forward to hearing from you"?

No, they sent you an acknowledgement which is like a return receipt. No further action necessary.

  • Thank you.

Sorry for the stupid question. I was doubting myself!

It wasn't a stupid question. If it turned out that everyone sent in a little note then you would have felt stupid for not doing so!
