I Need a Vacay

I gals. I usually post on the Starting Over board but was hoping for some travel recs here.

I have over a month's worth of vacation. I haven't traveled in a looong time. I need an overseas vacation desperately. Now that I am single, I plan to travel by myself.

Anyone have any ideas on great destinations to go to alone? I am not a totally experienced traveler so easy and safe is good. I figured I'd stay in hostels and meet people, hopefully.

Please share any recs!

Re: I Need a Vacay

  • i would feel perfectly comfortable in florence alone.

as for hostels-i can't recommend any-haven't stayed at any, but anywhere you go consider booking tours of places with groups or booking cooking classes or something.

Friday, December 28 2012. The day I had emergency appendix surgery in Mexico and quit smoking. Proof that everything has a good side!! DH and I are happily child-free!! No due date or toddler tickers here!! my read shelf:
Alison's book recommendations, favorite quotes, book clubs, book trivia, book lists (read shelf)
  • What month are you wanting to travel and what's your budget?  What do you like doing and what don't you like?  And where have you been before that you either (1) liked and would return to or (2) would never go back to?
  • Spain. SO Many things to do and many little cafes to hang out in alone, with no judgment!!

I'd agree with Florence and would add anywhere in the UK.  However, the only time I have felt unsafe in Europe was in southern Spain after a few interactions with some gypsies in Granada. I have no experience with hostels though.

  • Thanks for the recs so far. I have already been to Italy so I am not really interested in going there. I did love it though. I have also been to Bermuda (not much of a fan) and Ensenada (again not a huge fan, although I did like other parts of Mexico - I love the culture).

As for what I like to do, I like hiking, seeing old towns/buildings and just walking around a pretty city. I like cafes where I can write. I also love the beach and water.

I think I want to take a 2-week vacation at most. I haven't really thought of a budget, but I want it to be pretty cheap and affordable. I am not a fancy person.

  • Most places in Europe would probably work quite well for you. With two weeks, you could see London, Paris, and Amsterdam. After my divorce I traveled to Europe for two weeks all by myself and had an amazing trip! I had been to quite a few places in Europe prior to my trip so I ended up selecting Amsterdam as my first stop as I had never visited the city. Aside from spending the first three nights in Amsterdam I had no plans. I eventually visited Delft and Haarlem in the Netherlands, Bruges and Brussels in Belgium, and then went to Ireland for a week and visited Dublin and Galway. I am normally a type A planner so taking a trip like that (where I was forced to relax and not follow an itinerary) was immensely beneficial, especially after the divorce.

I stayed in hostels most of the time, but did a combination of private rooms and shared rooms. Sometimes I felt like socializing with others but sometimes I just wanted my own space so it worked out quite well.

  • If you want to meet people that you've pre-screened, you might try couchsurfing.org.  You don't have to stay on someone's couch to use the website and meet people.  (Although I've actually "couch surfed", and it was great.) Tons of people on the site just use it to meet people with similar interests while traveling.  Like, you can arrange to meet up for coffee or dinner with someone in the city.  And most big cities have weekly meet-ups where locals and travelers meet at a set location (often at a local event or bar).  Anyways, it's fun if you don't know anyone in the city where you are traveling.

I'd recommend Spain (Toledo, Madrid, Seville, Barcelona).  Or Amsterdam (I was there alone at a hostel and felt pretty safe - and they have good walking tours and museums, which are nice "by yourself" activities).   Or Austria (Salzburg, Vienna).
