toy storage / rotation

So what does everyone do with toys? Do you keep them all out all the time? Do you rotate daily / weekly? Do you have a playroom?

Just feeling overwhelemed with all the toys! And of course I went through them to get rid of the baby toys, and that is all she now wants to play with (baby links and boxes).. We are going to put a shelving unit in the basement for easy rotation and only keep a select few out to play with.

Just wondering if anyone else has had any brilliant ideas for toy storage...

Re: toy storage / rotation

  • In general we just don't get a lot for her.  Just before Christmas I went through and put all the really baby stuff away in the attic.  We only got her like 5 gifts and she didn't get a ton from family either so that helps.

Now, for her birthday, she got a TON.  I put a few things out and then stored some for later / some that were 'older' toys.  I then was able to introduce new things all the time from May onwards.

We have no playroom and just one living space that is living room, playroom, tv room, etc so we have to be minimal.

  • In our living room we have this:

which holds all of his little stuff (blocks, balls, cars, etc.)

We also have a small basket for bigger items like magna-doodle, golf clubs, etc. We right now have only "new" stuff out in the LR. In his bedroom, we have a huge toy box (rubbermaid I think) that houses all of his "old" stuff (which is really just from September!) and then we store even more in his closet- mostly stuff that is too old for him (Mr. Potato Head, for example). I plan on rotating a few things in & out from his room to the LR every couple of weeks as I see fit.

And, yeah we just packed up all of the baby toys into a big tote and stored it for a few months.

  • We rotate toys between Kodi's bedroom, the living room and storage in our basement.  Kodi rarely plays in his room so we store a lot there (in cloth cubes on a tall bookcase) and just bring a few things out to the living room where he plays all day long.  We have a small bookcase in the living room and put toys on that.  What doesn't fit in the bedroom or living room gets moved to the basement and I rotate things to keep it fresh.

OMG YES! The second I am ready to toss a toy it's like he sense that and starts playing with it all the time.

We have 6 matching baskets that work with our decor on our book shelves and under our sofa table that we store his books and toys in.

God to have a playroom. That would be marvelous!

  • Most of her toys stay out in her playroom.  All of the baby/younger ones are currently either in a basket or toy chest in Lily's room... Mads will drag some out from time to time but knows that they go back in there when she's done.  We have a few of her "older" toys/new things that she got for CHristmas still packed away in a box in the attic & figure we'll slowly take one out at a time over the course of the winter when we're housebound & going stir-crazy.  For each one that we take out, we'll replace it with another one that's been ignored recently.
  • Get a kids toy box! The organizers are great but require some space. We got two toy boxes and our two little ones love rummaging inside discovering old and new things to play with. They?ve also learnt to put away their toys after playing with them. The toy box also makes a nice bench to sit on.
