Lurker with questions, We are going on vacation in a couple weeks to Seattle and want to do an overnight trip to Portland. I don't know anything about the city. Is everything central or spread out? Where would be a good place to stay? Things to do? We have a 20 month old
TIA

Re: Portland anyone?
Is there anything in particular you want to do in Portland? It's a fairly compact city so you could stay downtown walk to most of the interesting points. But if you don't have a specific reason for visiting I don't think it's worth the time or the drive from Seattle. If you're just looking to do a day trip/overnight trip I think there are better options (Port Angeles, Mt. Rainier, Whidbey Island).
And BTW that is one adorable kiddo!
Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime.

Thanks so much!
No real reason to go other than DH wants to go and we watched Diners, Dine-ins and Dive and we want to check out Pine State Biscuit. He says that he want to go to a basketball game. We are already doing a day trip to San Fran and it will probably be too much for our little week. Thanks for the advice. Maybe I can talk him out of it.
I went to Portland last May and have two entries in my travel blog on the trip:

While some of the sights are central, many things are spread out so it depends on what you want to see and do. We are from Seattle so we drove down and had a car which made things much easier.
Im from PDX and you want more than a day to see the city, especially if youre driving down from Seattle. Traffic can be dreadful in both cities. The drive to Portland can take anywhere from 3.5 to 5 hours or so. Portland is a pretty small city and a lot can be seen without too much driving around but certainly not in an afternoon. And Ithink that would be way too much traveling for your toddler in one day.
When you do come check out the zoo, Rose Garden, Japanese Garden, Voodoo Doughnut, Saturday Market, Pioneer Square, the Pearl District and NW 23rd. There are lots of hotels downtown that are good like the Westin, Marriott, Benson and Governor Hotel
